am I too old to play again?

Started playing bass in my mid teens, put it down and picked it up multiple times, I've started and stopped a lot of things in my life, I will be 57 this year and at this point playing bass is the one thing that is non negotiable, I put it right up there with the necessitys of life, food, water, shelter, and BASS !
I'll only stop when I cant physicaly move my fingers any more or I become completely deaf ( that process has already begun )
Never too old my friend !

I started playing in high school... stopped when I had kids. Picked it back up at age 40, now I'm almost 59 and play in three bands. I echo the never too oldsters! Get a bass and play your ass off.

I apologize I have not read all the messages in this. I played hard from 1977 to 1992 and put everything in the attic till last year when the kids in church wanted me to help them do some worship music. I am 59 years old. I don't have the chops I once did but am having a great time falling back in love with playing again. Heck yeah man... Go for it!!!!

I can play bass but I can't do arithmetic or possess memory function any longer... I am fifty-six.....

I'm in a recording session tonight with an alternative country upstart band with some guys less than half my age of 46. I regularly gig with my friends' kids. Hitting the ones has nothing to do with your age. If you still got the chops, or even if you just want to play for the joy of playing again, I say go for it!

I'm sorry, the age cutoff is 53 years, 9 months. You just missed it.

Seriously, there are guys in their 80's still rocking it.

Cause I was too o-o-old to-o rock and ro-o-oll
But I'm too young to die...

I started at 50 having never played any stringed instrument before. My only music experience was trumpet in high school. I'm still not very good, but have a lot of fun with it and play at my church once or twice a month.

Go for it!

I have an on and off and on again history of playing Guitar and Bass beginning when I was ten years old. There were combos in High School, Rock bands in college, groups of friends to jam with here and there. About 20 years ago my new next door neighbor and I got to talking over our lawnmowers and discovered that we had similar tastes in music and desire to play. Fast forward to the present we have been playing together in a Rock and Blues band with heavy emphasis on original material since 1998. I'm 70 years old now and all I can say is that I am grateful for every note I have been blessed to play. They will be prying my bass from my cold dead wore slap out fingers. That's when I'll stop. You are never too young or old to pick up a musical instrument and learn to play or rekindle the flame after taking a break for kids or work or whatever. Music is a great hobby. You will gain friends maybe make a little money. Its meditative and therapeutic. So many good things !!! So, go for it...... and have fun..

I'm 56 and just relaunching with two projects (Jazz-standards duo, classic honky-tonk combo). Aside from an arthitic pinky, I'm loving it, and learning more than I probably have over the last 20 years.[/QUOTE]

I 55 picked up bass when i was 17, havnt played in a band in over 3 years as soon as I heal up from my Motorcycle accident Im gonna look into playing in a band again, but I have been keeping up practicing, especially these past 7 months that I have not worked so I am better, never to old My Man, JUST DO IT....Oh but I have dumped the heavy rigs and went to the much lighter stuff tthey have these days...:thumbsup:

No! You are NEVER too old. I played every day for 16 years and then didn't play for 11 years. I picked up the bass and started playing in a classic rock band and slowly improved. And five years later I am still improving.

Play again. You will be glad you did.
