am I too old to play again?

I'll be 60 in a few months, and I teach beginning guitar and bass to kids every day, so I play a LOT and enjoy it.

But I am too old and REALLY done with ever wanting to gig again... or, heaven forbid, join a band. Waaay too much hassle and drama for my temperment.

60 here - and I still haven't grown up. It's all in the blood. And age is just a number - unless you choose to make it more than that.

When I was in my early teens, someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.

I said, "About 90 years old."

I still hold to that. BB King gigged until he was 87 or so.

I'm 62, still gigging. But do check out the very light amps and cabs out there today. Your back and knees will thank you.

I'm 54 too, never completely stopped playing, but definitely some long dry spells. Its a hobby for me, not a profession, so it has to compete for time and money with everything else. These days I spend more time trying to learn how to build basses than playing, a really expensive way to combine two hobbies, bass and woodworking. One of my four sons took it up, and at 18 he's a better bassist than I ever was in my hack college band glory days. I'm making him a bass as soon as I finish building one for myself. You've done the major work of life, reward yourself with something that you like.

@Gravedigger Dav , dontcha got a few years on our friend here?

OP, sky's the limit. If you want to play again you can do it! I know another fellow around here who is 71, but has the livelihood of a 50 year old. Keep jamming!

No! I am 57 and stopped playing from 1982-2010. I started playing again because my brother started up our old garage band again back home and it fired me up. I learn some of their set list and when I go back, I borrow a bass and I jam with them and let me tell you, I am in heaven playing with them again. I have always been a hack, but I am learning to sight read and am trying to become as good as I can be through the excellent teaching web sites that are out there.

I have a buddy out here that jams with a bunch of guys now and then and that's my goal to get back in a live situation, not playing along to Youtube all the time, which isn't bad and I enjoy it immensely, but I love the interaction of a band or jam session.

Life's too damn short. Make some freakin' music. :bassist:

I'm 57 and play almost every weekend. Light gear and good bandmates makes "playing after 50" an awesome experience. If you don't want to gig but still play...there are many videos and websites to gain and improve skills. Go for it!
