Old blues cat I used to play with had written and recorded a bunch of stuff in the 90s that required a 5 string for low D and C notes to play properly.

I switched over to 5ers when I joined the band in 2004.

5StringBlues

Don't think that these were just straight 1 4 5 blues changes in low keys, I could have just tuned down for that.

These were slick funk and R and B tunes, with horn sections and B3 keyboard parts.

My guy was born in 1928 but loved to keep things "FRESH", as he used to say.

My name has several origin stories. Take your pick:
  1. It’s a nickname from my NFL days. I’m 6’7” @ 325 lbs. Running downfield in a red jersey and helmet, I look like a charging rhino.
  2. It’s my witness protection code name. I know where all the bodies are buried, cuz I put them there. (My handlers told me to pick a low profile profession that wouldn’t attract attention. So I choose “bass player” instead of working at the Cinnabon at the mall. ;))
  3. It’s my name on OnlyFans. Tip me $20 and I’ll show you why.
  4. When I had hair, it was long and red. One day at rehearsal my guitar player called me “Red Rhino”…. and it stuck.
