Amateur radio

Ham radio continues to thrive. Perhaps the dwindling importance of shortwave for international broadcasting and other communications has, counter-intuitively, increased interest in amateur experimentation in this part of the spectrum.

Certainly when the need to pass a morse test was withdrawn for radio amateurs here in the UK, that mode saw a boost in interest, and morse (CW) remains a very popular aspect of the hobby.

Any more radio hams on here?

My usual routine when travelling to a gig is to set off nice and early and plot a route that includes somewhere where I can park and then climb a hill or mountain - then do SOTA (Summits on the Air) activity - before descending, continuing my journey, and getting to soundcheck on time!

I find it a great way to mix business and pleasure!

Any other bass players on here that are also licensed radio hams?

My callsign is M1EYP. I operate HF/VHF/UHF on CW, SSB, FM, FT8, SSTV etc

Call signs are "public". Anyone can Google your call sign and get your name and address. I prefer not to post mine. But I've been a ham for almost a decade. Mainly VHF/UHF. My mobile rig will do 10 meters but I've never hooked up an antenna for that.

My HF rig needs a couple of caps to finish a referb. It's been on my bench for several years now and I just never went back to finish it up. We're getting a few trees removed soon and I have been thinking about stringing up a nice wire dipole once that's done and dusting off the HF.

If anybody is interested...
I use an icom 5100 feeding to a signalstalk nmo antenna mag-mounted to the center of the roof. It's a great combo.

I just put in a President Bill FCC feeding to a Larson NMO27 stuck on a rear corner mount. It seems OK but it's hard to judge performance with so little traffic. I only wanted it for fun anyway. I spend a lot of time commuting on the interstate so I wanted to see if I could hear anything.
