It's the automotive version of Indie outrunning the giant stone marble in Raiders.
Geez...I can't help but wonder if they survived that nightmare.
I believe (hope) the picture was taken out the back of the next-to-last vehicle. Pyroclastic flow is no joke - I'd rather be run down by Indy's big marble, honestly! (Those clouds are vaporized rock many hundreds of degrees hot, and moving at something like 350 mph.)
