Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I love the comfort with this idea I have with my current band. And I have to remind myself of it too.

Writing original stuff together, the drummer, the guitar player, they'll just very comfortable with rests and simplicity, often for contrast. I try to be too.

I realized recently the guitar player had worked up an awesomely complex ambient mess for the first chorus (a low key, lower tempo transitional before the second one goes bigger). When I went to overdub my final bass part it took way to long to click that the best bass part, for the song, was nothing. The contrast with the busy bass parts around it make it work.

I actually hate when I'm in the middle like that with gear -- "do I just need to figure this out somehow or is it a limit where I shouldn't be using it for this?"

I had the opposite experience Monday night at band practice. We're working on a 9-minute song (our longest) and there was a part where the guitar gets going and I was doing something very simple because I didn't want to muck it up. But both the drummer and guitarist wanted something more. The guitarist actually sang something as a suggestion, and I liked it, so that's the bassline now.

More often, it goes the other way, but subtracting.

That thing is wonderfully creepy, and far be it for me to criticize his design and build skills, but he needs to stop the clicking sound from the teeth. Put some rubber gaskets in there or something. That would finish it.

Ya, we can go either way, writing together. As a three piece, guitar player would prefer not to just strum chords or similar and that suits me fine. So sometimes, on bass, Im filing in what might be more typically a bass and rhythm guitar space. But I tend to be hyperactive anyway so that is easy for me. Taking a breather is harder.
