Americans keeping their autos longer than ever

2007 civic ex I bought new, 168k miles currently....
2005 silverado 2500hd duramax, 291k
2002 Honda Foreman Rubicon, 2700 miles

The wife has a 2003 impala with about 110k.

Wife's car has been paid off a couple years now, I paid the honda off a year ago and paid cash for the truck and quad. Might shop for a new wife car soon as we have a baby on the way....

I think people should get at least 20 years out of a car, considering how much you pay for a new one.

Road salt is the killer around here. I've sent plenty of cars that ran well to the crusher with rotten frames.

Anything older than 2000 that rolls in to the shop is typically a rot box underneath.

It's my daily driver too. I put 65 miles a day on it. I've only had minor issues with it, knock on wood. It's beat up and ugly, interior is shot, but runs well.

Probably not like they use much road salt in Houston, but here the fuel lines, brake lines and subframes don't last. Also, the electronics are piss poor, and if you have the 3400 you're going to be doing head gaskets by 100k.

2000 Ford Mustang with 161,000. I am having the clutch redone right now. Runs great!

1994 Ford Ranger with 431,000 up until last year. I was letting my dad use it and he burned out the clutch. I rarely drove it anymore and plastic stuff was falling apart, so I gave it away. I did not want to put in a new clutch and keep insuring it. The motor ran fine and had never been opened, other than putting in 2 timing belts.

I learned from rather well off friends to buy good cars, take care of them, and drive the wheels off them.

Wife is currently driving a 2000 Honda Odessy with 185,000 miles. Last year I sold my '95 Dodge Dakota with 175,000.

My personal record is the '81 Datsun 720 King Cab pickup that I sold after 14 years and 248,000 miles. It was still driving it daily, but we had a baby and I needed something with a proper backseat and good anchor points for a baby seat.

I have never kept a vehicle over a year.
1 2007 nissan 4wd frontier
1997 4runner 4wd
1998 Land Rover Discovery
2006 Land Rover LR3

And I always sell for as much as I paid. Except the first one. I lost about 1k not bad for a 1 year old vehicle with an extra 40k.

That's an interesting take...especially if you care for your vehicles and are able to buy them at a good price.

I have a 2005 Ford Escape...74k on it. Bought it new with 0% interest and for the 5 year loan never made a penny extra on the payment (why would I?). It is paid off now over 2 years and I plan to keep it until around 95k (6 digits on the odometer tends to change the pricing on sale or trade). But...I could roll with it if I didn't get car GAS all the time ha ha.

Car payments suck and I hate paying interest...hope to purchase my next car with cash.

You don't get the humidity in the air in the winter out there either. Where I am, I'm right on the Bay of Fundy. The city uses the cheapest salt they can get, of course, plus there is salt in the air, plus pollutants to take into account.
My last car was a 97 Merc Sable wagon, with ~250,000 kms on it. The body wasn't bad, and it ran fairly well, but the floor was going, as well as the exhaust. The fuel and brake lines had been replaced as well as the K frame by the previous owner. It wouldn't pass the annual inspection we have here, so I had to get rid of it. I have seen a lot of late model cars/trucks on Kijiji, (10-12 yrs old) that didn't pass inspection, most due to bad rocker panels. They're usually the first thing to go here.
