I voted "other" because I don't think America's greatest enemy is military per se. Not to get all "preachy" but I think it's popular media and corporate greed - both are doing more damage to us than any darn thing. In both world wars our casualties were really a fraction of what other nation's had faced. With exception on the US Civil war, we've been really lucky, so yeah. I don't see our enemy as a uniformed military person, I see it as a set of bad ideals and irresponsible greed that's eating us up from teh inside out. just MHO is all

Wrong. You've succeded into making it political by pointing out all of America's faults, which was never my intention. I want to keep this strictly historical, OK?

Sorry Strat, no disrespect meant of course but I think that our greatest enemy is not necessarily a military one, seriously. We're a pretty strong country and I don't think we've ever been taken to our knees like many other nations have. We've been lucky.
Maybe edit the OP to indicate that you are looking for the greatest military enemy only?
