Amp Burn-In?

WAIT! WAIT! Cow magnets!

They were all the rage to keep the molecules of gasoline in line as it traveled through the gas lines of your engine so you'd get extra mileage from your cars. This was during the last time there was a real oil shortage.

Now --- since that fad has gone into the long drop, I bet some enterprising person can repackage cow magnets as electron combing devices for amplifiers.

Maybe it can cure mismatched cabs too! Wow! What a wide open market!

I can't speak for better gas mileage - but that can be worked out later on.

Who wants to design the packaging?

Already thinking about it. Secondary market item: Magnetically Aligned signal wire! :D
 
I understand it can take literally 200 hours or more of actual playing time for stereo home audio amplifiers ( both solid state and tube) to burn in before they sound their best .
Electronic components do not 'burn-in'. Claims that they do are snake-oil. Speakers break in, maximum time frame with normal playing is at most 40 hours, usually half that.

That's where I heard it from too , from various dealers of audiophile equipment. I must say, in the audiophile world, it is accepted as truth, not myth, that audiophile equipment needs to be played for a number of hours to sound its best , even if it's just played thru head phones. Perhaps it's because of the high fidelity nature of this equipment .
Want to be an oddiophile? Cut a small hole in your pocket. Fill the pocket with marbles. Walk down the street. As you walk the marbles will fall out the hole and be lost. When you've lost all your marbles you are an oddiophile!
 
I do know this:

You must align the N-S magnetic field from your speaker magnets with the N-S earth field / otherwise you get cross field dissonance

Same is true with your pickups in your bass - if you don't have your guitar aligned with the earth magnetic field you will get the same type of interference

However, if the room you are playing in is shaped like a four sided Pyramid (properly aligned, of course), then you are "protected" from such effects

I don't believe that burn-in comes into play with musical instrument amps. Audiophiles tend to read too much into potential concerns and run with them. For example...

Resistor values do change with temperature and age. Manufacturers specify stability in terms of ppm/year. I've worked on applications where the specifications required that critical resistors required burning in at the rated power for a specified time period to stabilize the component.

Old carbon composition resistors can absorb moisture when in storage and this can affect their nominal values. Baking them drives off the moisture and returns their stability.

Dielctric properties of the WIRES?? Give me a break. I worked in the pro audio business for many years building the finest audio gear on the planet, and we never had a thought about the "sound" of the wires. Hee Hee Hee.

The main reason that we, and other companies such as Bryston "ran-in" the gear for some time was to catch faulty components before they failed in the field.

As far as a bass amp - I could see some physical conditioning of drivers, but electronics?

That may have been true for old analog tube amplifiers ... the tone on those will change as the tubes age.

100 hours of burn in? Sound like a way to charge more to me.
