Hmmmm...there does seem to be some confusion on this from various sites. This is what the Epifani site says. I think if I'm over or under +/- 100 watts or so I'll be ok either way. I think the biggest thing is to not turn the amp up so much that it begins clipping which will send some crappy signal to the cab.

Q: How should I match my amp with my speaker cabinets?
A: Let's consider power first. For optimum results the rule of thumb is that your amplifier's power rating should be HIGHER than that of your speaker cabinet. Look at it this way... If a car that can only reach 100 MPH is driven at 100 MPH, it is being forced to operate at its maximum capacity and will not perform very well, but if a high performance car, that can reach a speed of 200 MPH is driven only at 100 MPH, it handles beautifully because it has plenty of power to spare. ?? In like manner, a 100 watt amp, when using all 100 watts, is being driven to its maximum capabilities and will not perform well. However, a 500 or 1,000 watt amp that is using only 100 watts of its power is going to perform MUCH SMOOTHER because the amp does not have to push itself at MAXIMUM power to reach the 100 watt level. The result is a much CLEANER TONE at higher volume levels.

I'm running two 700RB II's through two 2X15 cabs (Acoustic 106's) They are each seperate for each pickup. If I ran either one more than half way up, I'd be overpowering the band and boredering on frying my cab/s speakers.
Maybe get an SVT and a 810 fridge and be done with it. Costs $$ for that but it will be WAY more than you ever need for most places...unless you are playing MSG, and in most cases you will most likely be going direct through the FOH anyways.

I've got a GK 1001 RB-II and LOVE it! As far as the fan goes, it is connected to a thermostat that turns it on and controls speed - warmer amp, higher fan speed. Most of the time, I don't even notice it running. I could be remembering wrong, but I think the bulk of the heat producing elements are located close to and underneath the fan, which vents up. When mine is running, it's usually running low. I don't have it rack mounted either, which I'm sure helps.

I played through an Ampeg rig for 9 years. Sold it and picked up my current: GK, SWR Workingman's Tower 8x10. Haven't looked back.
