Amp noob seeks amp help

I would like to suggest that perhaps a head might work just fine for your needs. I've played both ways before ... right now, I'm primarily using an old tube head, but before that, I had a 6-space bi-amped rig.

I've never owned a dedicated preamp. Perhaps you could find a head that you liked the tone of and that had enough power for your present situation. I don't understand why everyone thinks that 500 watts ought to be some minimum, especially if you're new to the game. Sure, you have two guitarists with half stacks or whatnot, but that doesn't mean that they are going to run it full it out all the time. There is this myth of every guitarist being a jerk about turning volume full right all the time, and I've just never encountered that. I played with 240 watts into a 2x10 and 1x15, and went toe to toe with a Marshall DSL100. I didn't run out of head room, even with a low B.

Get yourself the best head you can afford, preferably rack-able, and if you need more power down the road, add a power amp onto it. Much, much more versatility than a pre-power set up when it comes to just gear that you own. If you have to do a small gig and don't care to do the carry, you can bring just your head, and leave a 30 pound power amp back in the rack at home.
