amp problem

If I used the wrong gauge and amperage power cord on my amp, would it make it hum loudly? Would it even power on?
All I am getting is a loud hum and no sound from my bass....but I did notice that the cord I was using was not the correct one.

Nope.

Yes.

Plug in your amp (into the AC outlet) but leave the input jack(s) empty, and power up. Still hum?

If so, give us some more info wrt amp make+model and so on.

Also let us know whether this amp was just transported or suffered physical impact.

the plate that is on the back of amp that the cord goes into, has broken....meaning the receptacle is loose and goes into the amp if I dont leave it plugged in. Someone at church took the plug out so now I have to unscrew the plate and move the receptacle back to its slot and plug it in. SO i did that but cant find the correct cord. So I used one that I found that fit and turned it on.....the power light came on but hummed loudly. I have ordered the correct replacement cord to see if that solves the problem....if not, im taking it in to the music store and have them look at it.

My question was....if a wrong amperage and gauge cord was used, would it allow it to even turn on? If so, would it make it hum loudly?

So, your main AC outlet is broken? That could have damaged who knows what behind it. Take it in to a qualified amp tech, and your problems are over.

if its a 3 prong cord, the cord could be wired incorrectly. if its a 2 prong cord, switching prongs or polarity wouldent have hurt it. usually amps hum when the power supply capacitors are bad. wait till u have the correct one and try it again.
