I know I'll get a 1000 suggestions if I don't lay down some prequalifications so:
Currenly using Kustom 1200 Groove. The thing is great, but way too heavy, so I'm looking for that deep tone that the heavy amps generate, but want to shed some serious weight. min 1000 watts and has to be light weight. I like the idea of a tubed preamp. I'm thinking that would give me the deep rich tone I'm looking for. I narrowed down the list of amps I would try but each has a problem:
the new Peavey Minimega 1000W: Promised the end of January, now saying the end of April. From a recent "Undercover Boss" episode on Peavey, they're moving the whole production plant to China, so I think the first production runs will be rittled with issues. I didn't see the episode but my friend who did said the company looked like it was in shambles with just a skeleton crew.
Genz-Benz - 900W - A little less than the grand I want but like I said I like the 3 tube pre-amp idea. But Fender bought the company and put them out of business. Now only used equipment. Support is still available but with my luck, it will cease to exist the day I buy one. Hard to try one out when it eBay has it listed.
Bugera Veyron 2000W - I heard good and bad about Behringer, can't find any reviews on this amp, so not sure I want to risk it just yet since it's so rare. They say it's a GB rip-off, who knows, none available anyway, (at least I couldn't locate). Looks cool, but 2000 watts out of 10 Lbs???? I'm thinking it'll have that tinny sound, loud but thin.
I played though a 1000 watt TecAmp recently but the tone was thin, and no growl. So that's out.
I'm not a real main stream kind guy so I'd like to find a low production amp producer with high quality, an amp craftsman if you will. If that even exists.
Ideas? suggestions?
