Amp Suggestions

Right now I have a cheap but decent bass that I have adjusted for my own liking that I am comfortable with playing. The problem is my bass amp is very lacking. It is big, bulky, heavy and not loud enough. It is a cheap Rogue RB60 from a long time ago. I am looking to get a new music project started and this amp wouldn't do well on stage.

I am looking an amp that will easily be heard in a live setting and give me the best bang for my buck. I am wanting to spend under $500 be it new or used. I play both slap and finger (if that helps) The more versatile the better. I would like to be able to dial in deep smooth tones ala dub reggae and also nice higher slap pop tones ala Primus. Something that could later be hooked to a cab would be nice but not a must. I am aiming to keep it under $500 but this is as much a buying experience as it will be a learning experience.

Thanks for reading!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will certainly look on here at the used gear.

The Bugera head is pretty nice. I am not familiar with the brand though and what is "valve" in terms of function?

Also, I don't know too much about bass gear since I have been mainly a guitarist all my life, but I have heard that speaker size has a lot to do with the tone itself. For what I am looking for, both tight slap and deep bass when dialed in correctly, what sort of cab and speaker size would I want to look for if I were to get that head?
