Amp techs, what's on your bench?

At $600, it wouldn't take that many jobs to pay off the investment.

Interesting that you make your own chassis. I've done some in aluminum and copper but usually buy them. Sometimes I've cheated and used metal plate with a wood frame.

What material do you use? Do you find it necessary to weld the corner seams? Ever chrome a chassis?
 
3D printing is a long way from being a viable manufacturing option for any any kind of parts that may require stresses. If you want a nice custom chess set piece it's great but if you need something to spin 10,000 RPM's don't count on it. I have looked at 3D printers at a cost of $850,000.00 and they are just not there yet. I recently looked at an aluminum prototype made on a 3D printer that took 4 days to make and the cost was a couple grand. Certainly not a viable option to just machining the thing.

3D printing is going to be the wave of the future but definitely not the present.

Waterjets are on the way out to be replaced by the new Laser machines which are faster, cheaper, cleaner, and yield a better product.

In Maryland / Northern VA area, lasers are replacing water jets and CNC machine for sophisticated sheet metal work.

Steel, welded seams. More commonly its refurb old chassis, weld them and powder coat, chrome is possible but not done it. More usually we work on car chassis (which arne't water jet cut): Invalid Link Removed

All CNC, most of the milling you see is done in a lathe. Some of the rectangular parts were done on a 5 axis mill the rest were either on a 6 axis turn mill or 8 axis Swiss lathe.

If you look at the bottom of the pic about 3/4 to the right there is a small rectangular aluminum block, that part is made out of round bar on a Hardinge Quest Twin Spindle turn mill/lathe. Technology has come a long way for sure.

These are all recent jobs, the parts range from Aerospace to Weapons, to Firearms, to Electronics, Medical Devices, Cryogenics, and more.

Yup, exactly. I know you could say it belongs in FX, but I think this sort of gear fits better with the technology discussions in this forum than it would fit over there, so I'm happy for twofingers to go ahead and start his thread about the recon job here in Amps. Looks like really nice work, by the way.
