Ampeg 410 Makeover with Behr DeckOver

I am in the process of redoing an Ampeg SVT 410hlf cabinet and had planned on covering it in DuraTex. I had recently done a 210 cabinet using Duratex with great results. I ordered some more from Parts Express to cover the 410 but some how the order got cancelled due to a Paypal error. I was just getting ready to order it again when I saw a couple of products at Home Depot that I thought might work too. After looking at samples and talking to the paint guy I decided on Behr DeckOver. I just applied the second coat and it goes on much the same way the Duratex did. Seems to cover the same and gives about the same texture using the small texture roller that came with the Duratex I previously ordered. It's about $36 a gallon in any color compared to Duratex which is about $42 for a quart when ordered in a color other than black. Hopefully I will finish painting it tomorrow and give it a couple of days to dry before putting it back together. Here are a few pics of my progress so far.

Stupid eggshell-fragile SVT-410hlf tolex... I swear I sneezed on mine and the tolex ripped. Can't tell you how many TB reviews I read where people said "the tolex sucks on these things" and I was like "yeah whatever, you just abused it". They didn't abuse it, they grazed it with a sub-400-thread-count bed sheet. It seems ironic that such a bass bellowing beast would have such a cheap covering. Needless to say, I'm curious how your paint job turns out, because I'll be having to do it some day.

This cab was already pretty beat up when I got it so I really can't judge how fragile the tolex was. I will say this is the third cabinet I have redone in the past year and this one was by far the easiest to strip! The tolex came off in big strips with very little effort.

Nice job, that cabinet looks great! One of the nice things about deckover (or rustoleum's restore) is that you topcoat it with latex-based paint if you want to change the color. I picked up a gallon of the Rustoleum version a few months ago when I found it on the "oops" shelf (already mixed to a customer's color) for $9.

Haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I planned to go over it with another color since the gallon I bought is gray.

Thanks! I actually saw your post about the Rustoleum in another thread and that is how I found out about it. I went to Home Depot to get some and the paint guy talked me out of Rustoleum because they had quite a few complaints about it not holding up well. I told him that I wasn't actually using it for a deck or anything outdoors but he still suggested I go with the Behr version. I think either one would be fine for this application. Like JimmyM said, it will be interesting to see how it holds up over time.

Yup. I used this for a bridge in my yard that gets light use, it did not last 6 months and started flaking. Before summer almost all of it came off on its own.
I got another bucket and did my porch in August. Bare wood, primed, paint 3 layers. The steps and deck are flaking off already.:banghead:
My self and my neighbor are using the Behr DeckOver, mine on a wooden walkway and his on concrete, it is holding up to the use and the weather really good,
Thank you, I will try this. I have more to do, and redo.

End of rant. Sorry.

gjbassist, That is beautiful, I love the color with the black.

Looks good! I'm partial to black Duratex but this certainly looks very close in texture. How's the dry time? One of the nice features of Duratex is the short dry/cure cycle between coats.

I found the dry time to be similar, maybe a bit longer but I was still easily able to do two coats in one afternoon. It does have a bit more odor than Duratex but it goes away as soon as it dries.
