Ampeg 450 peaking problem

I bought an Ampeg 450 head new about 6 months and am running it through the Ampeg 610 cab, it sounds great but i am having trouble with it peaking a lot, roughly %70 of the time i am playing. I turned the pad on to keep it from clipping but the peak light still comes on a lot. I only have the gain at about 3 and the volume at 4 and im not running any boost pedals or anything into it. Is this bad for my head? Do i need to pair my volume and gain nobs differently? Any other thoughts on how to make the peaking stop?

you're not supposed to make it stop. it should be lighting up pretty solidly before you'll hear any clipping. it's not a clip indicator...it's a signal indicator. use your ears instead...turn it up to where you can hear it clipping, then back off a little till it stops.
