Ampeg 610

My favorite cab, minus weight. My Mesa Powerhouse was a VERY close second.
I liked it better than an 8x10.

It was boomy and nothing like an 810. its almost exactly like the 410HLF. I wish it was lighter and a closed cab.

+1 to that. I bought one thinking it would sound like my 810 and be easier to move around...it was slightly lighter, yet there were no similarities in tone. I found the low end wasn't nearly as tight and it was easy to get a boomy sound out of it if you were not careful with your EQing.
I have the 810E and 610HLF. Really, I have to say that I prefer the 610. Actually, the 610HLF is my all-time favorite cab! It can do it all! In the realm of larger, heavier cabs, I think it's one of the lightest. It's easy to move around (tilt-back casters, skid rails, side handles, etc.). The tone is surely not "vintage" sounding, but very well-rounded. It cuts through the mix tons better than the 810 does.
I've got the 6x10 as well. Great cab, super loud and clean. It is a bit much to lug around (you wouldn't want to use it for 3 songs at a coffee house). But if you need to fill a venue you can do it without running through the PA for sure. Depending what you need it for, its one of the best.
I owned the 610HLF for two years. It is Ampeg's best cabinet, because it's got plenty of wattage handling and is ported so it doesn't sound like the Fridge. But its bulk and weight was a killer, especially when I had to do solo gigs.
i had an 8x10 and downsized to the 610. it is easier to bring around with me, but i liked the tone of my 8x10 better. i thought too that the 610 would sound just like it. i wish i could safely seal up those ports somehow and get the hlf to be tighter.

I don't understand why everyone compares it to the 8x10, they are two totally different cabs, and I don't think ampeg ever intended for them to be similar.
Just because something has the label 'Ampeg' on it in my opinion doesn't mean it has to have the ''classic'' sound.
as for my opinion, I love my 610hlf. Sound wise, I think it would handle just about as much as the 8x10. If you want full lows, go with the 6x10. If you want the scooped mid stuff I'd go with the 8x10.

Everyone seems to have beaten me to it. My favotite cab that I have owned, and I kind of regret selling mine. Great tone, but need to be careful on the EQ to keep it from getting too loose. This thing can make some serious low end.
+1 I only had the 410HLF & if it's ANYTHING like that-it's a beast of a cab!!! HUGE low end!!! I found mine a bit too much lows & have gone to a Berg.NV610 which I like FAR more-but thats just MY view & MY ears!
The 610 & 410HLF cabs are built like tanks-solid, heavy. & sound the same IMHO-solid & heavy
If U like that tone-you'll LOVE the HLF cab! My 410 did sound great!yeah. i would totally trade it up too. there was a few on here but they were all far as well.If only we weren't 1500 miles apart.
kicker is, i have on in NJ that wants to trade but it has no tolex and the fruit did some kind of sray paint stencil on the grill cloth of two kids playing leap frog.
I, too, use the 6X10. I wouldn't trade it for the world. Best sounding cab Ampeg makes, IMHO.............

Most of the tiny stages I play sees me staying pretty close to mine. When another bassist was in the room on a recent gig and asked if I was throught the PA, I had great delight in answering no
The 6x10 that has the classic 8x10 sealed-box vibe (perhaps even more of it) is the Bergantino NV610. The Ampeg 610HLF is ported and tweetered, and has a more modern vibe.

I know what you mean....on occasion I go wireless and (at my own risk
) venture out into the audience....I absolutely LOVE the fact that at 50-75 feet, it is STILL kicking me in the gut.....again, I have played all the Ampeg cabs from the 4X10s to the 8X10 to the PR8X10H and I STILL contend that the 6X10HLF is the best cab (at least for me) that Ampeg makes.

I've had my 610hlf for over 4 years and it rocks.The best over all cab Ampeg has out.You can play anytype of bass and any style of music though it.A cab well worth the money.

Scooped mid stuff???? Thats not the way most people would describe a sealed, tweeterless 8x10 cab. My 810E has more midrange punch and growl then any other combination of speakers i have ever tried. My fretless bass growls and mwahs gorgeously through the 810 and any lack of deep low end is more then made up for in sheer punch and volume!
