Ampeg 810E vs 610HLF

Why are these cabs priced the same? In all honestly the 810 is probably more than I need (especially because it outweighs me). I mostly play in recording sessions and small-ish gigs using an SVT 4 Pro, so the 610 is appealing to me, but I can't help but think if I'm going to spend the money I might as well get the 810 because who knows what I'll be doing down the road.

Thoughts? Is it ******** to spend the same money on a 610?

Yeah. The 610 used to be a couple hundred cheaper than the 810. I too was surprised they're the same price now. Maybe you can find a used 610?

It is kind of weird. Very different sounds though. You're talking a ported/tweeter 6x10 vs a sealed tweeter-less 8x10. Maybe cost of materials went up on the 6x10 in recent years. They use 6 ohm speakers so the custom manufacture price may have increased. Or they just want more money. Could be a little of both.

If it were me choosing between the two, I'd get the 8x10, but that's what I prefer. If you're only doing small gigs or studio stuff with an SVT-IV I'd say just get the 410HE or 410HLF depending on whether you want sealed or ported.

Other than the 610 fits in most car back seats and the 810 does not.

You'd be surprised. I could fit a 610HLF or my square-back 8x10 into the backseat of my old chevy aveo. If it fit in that car, it will fit in just about any 4-door sedan. That said, the 610HLF is shorter, and the side handles made it easier to get into the car on my own, just tip on the side and lift with one side handle and the towel bar and slide it into the seat. The modern 8x10s don't have those handles.

having owned both simultaneously (as well as the 410HLF), they are completely different animals, sound-wise. i like them both, but i kept the 8x10 since i like having the top 10's closer to ear level.

here's some pics of them:
