I have an opportunity to by a '99 Ampeg 810-en. The good ol' OSB years. He wants $300-$400. I haven't played it yet, but it seems like a deal of a lifetime even if it has that muddy sound - given the fact I've read plenty about swapping out Jensen mod10s. Its also road worn with torn tolex on one side..is it worth it? Could I get it for less, or am I getting greedy?

You're being greedy. I've never seen and 810 for less than $450, I would jump on it.

And even if it was the darker voiced cab, all you have to do is turn up the treble a bit more than normal. Also, I find those cab will sound quite a bit more "normal" at very loud volumes as they get pushed.

Hey JimmyM, noticed you know your ampeg stuff if I'm not mistaken.. Are you pretty good with dating/serial numbers? Got another potential cab.. This one is vintage SVT. Serial #53243. Serial number is located behind grill on lower section of housing... Not on back plate by outputs. Nothing I've found correlates with a 5 digit serial number. Any idea?

No idea whatsoever. Ampegs made in that late 60's-late 80's period are impossible to date by serial. Have to pull a speaker and check its EIA code.

Is it a flatback/squareback (no angled top/bottom and no towel bar) ? If so, those are the best Ampegs ever. Take along a battery and speaker cable and give it the "battery test" ( search that on here). Adjust your price according to how many speakers need reconing.

And yes, a pair of Mods in the top two slots will fix the "dark" ones.

Ive seen 810s as low as $300. Theres a 70s 810 on the local Craigslist for $350obo right now but it has no tolex left on it. Its grab it for that price for sure.
