Ampeg 8x10 vs. Avatar 4x10+2x12?

Hey guys, pretty new to the forum...

In the next couple months I'm going to be picking up a Peavey Firebass 700 from a guy I know, and I need some cabs to run it through. I am heavily leaning towards buying an Avatar 4x10 and a 2x12, both 4 ohm, but my bandmate says he knows where to get an Ampeg 8x10 for a fairly comparible price. Which would you suggest?

p.s.: I play in a death metal sort of band.

Thanks to any and all responses. If anyone knows of other comparible cabs for comparible prices, that would help too.

Adrien, I'd suggest you ask your bandmate to see if he could borrow the 810 for you to try at a pratice. The Ampeg is a sealed cab so it may or may not play well with a Peavey 700. Only your ears can decide. Plus....some people find the SVT 810 a bear to move, only your back can decide!
The Avatars are great cabs. Their ported, and I think they'd work well with a P.V. head. Plus having two cabs will give you some choices, (one cab for rehearsals, small gigs.)
I've got a old Avatar cab that I drive with a old G.K. 800 head, love it!

Lots easier moving a 410 and 212 around than an 810. Plus, as shoot-r mentioned, the 810 could be overkill in some situations.

I've got an Avatar 212 and it's great. I'd go with the Avatars.

Great guys, thanks. Most of our concerts are pretty high volume applications, but I still think I'm going to go for the Avatar cabs, because it will be overkill during band practice to run an 810. Thanks for all your help, and I'll let everyone know how it goes when I pick.

Looks like your choice has already been made, but here's another vote for the Avatars. I have a 2.12 and a 2.10, and love them dearly. Plus the mere idea of calling to place an order and actually talking to the man that builds them is something you won't get that often. I got the 2.12 first and loved it, and called him a week later to order the 2.10. I told him how pleased I was, and he threw in a t-shirt for me.

On top of that, they are so much easier to transport than traditional cabs!

I wish avatar made a single 12 or single 15 that was 500w's or higher. I'd like to match a single up with my 210's, but don't want to do it with a lesser powered cabinet.

But... I also need the single 12 or 15 cab to be 4ohms at 500w's. So I'm being specific.

If you have the two seperate cabs, you can always choose to use one or the other by itself for smaller engagements. When using both, it's MUCH easier to move and pack two smaller cabs vs. one large one (as was mentioned before).

Someday you might get a call to support a singer/songwriter at a coffeehouse - it will be nice to have options instead of lugging the 8x10 there! Always plan ahead for gear, don't buy for the short term!

I'm speaking with experience on this one. I went from the 'fridge' to two Avatar cabs and I haven't looked back. In this case, go with two cabs. I don't think you'll regret it. Much easier to move and more flexible for different situations.
