Ampeg 8X10 vs Mesa 8X10

The Ampeg fridge is THE standard for the big stages... what are the pros and cons of each cabinet?

Lamb of God's bassist was one of the first to receive the 8x10's. They are nice cabs.

It seems a little strange...
I've A/B'd my Mesa PH 4X10 with various cabs, including the Ampeg fridge with the same head (my old Buster), and the mesa seems way louder than the ampeg... btw I'm not interested in the volume...

The ampeg is way better imo. I own one, and i also tested one of the road eady mesa 810's, and besides the fact that it was heavy, it just did not sound the money, if that makes sense. Extremely deep, yet no clarity on the low notes. And I was only playing half a step down. If i were you i would go the ampeg. But find a usa one, the new Vietnamese ones have extremely thin plyboard, and a crap grill clothe.

Hmm..I would imagine that the Mesa would handle lows a lot better than the Ampeg would since its ported. The Ampeg is sealed and is known for punch and mids..I guess it would depend on the sound you're after. Try em both!

+1, the ampeg 810e has much more clarity to its sound. all the notes sound pure and crisp. might be cause the other cab is ported. hmm, i prefer the sound of the ampeg personally.

Bergies are available in europe... look on the site, there is a UK dealer. Price is almost the same as the ampeg, but the thing is smaller and lighter (and, according to most, better and louder sounding)

The Mesa is a very modern voiced cab, with tweeters and such. The Ampeg will get you a old school, dark kind of vibe. If you like the Ampeg tone better, the Berg NV 610 is for you, though I dunno about avalibality in Europe.

with the price difference of the mesa and the ampeg you should get the
ampeg SVT-810HPC it has the classic fridge tone with hi-fi tone you can tailor to add onto it.

Mesa. No doubt. Every Ampeg cab I've played sounds like poop compared to my Mesa rig. Also, I opened up my SLM built 6x10 and found it basically strung together with the equivalent of car stereo wire, so the difference in quality is huge. Who knows how the Chinese made ones are going to be built.

i've owned the mesa powerhouse 6x10 and the ampeg 8x10 and they are quite different. i'd say the mesa is closer to the ampeg 4x10hlf which i've also owned since it is a ported design with tweeter.

in a nutshell, the mesa will have more low and high end and more overall clarity. it's sort of a nice balance between old school and modern hifi. the mesa is built much, much better.

as others have said, if you want a sealed design, go with a berg. if you are set on these two, go with the mesa.

Mesa has been making 8x10 cabs for many years. I've seen two, one new Roadready model and an older pre-Diesel cab. They both sounded similar to each other, and were MUCH better sounding than the Ampeg 810e. The older one was loaded with EVM10 bass speakers; I don't know what the new one had. I didn't get to A/B a Mesa with one of my old Ampeg coffins (which SLAY the 810e), but offhand I'd say they were voiced pretty similar with the Mesa having more highs and an overall more scooped sound. IIRC, it had a tweeter or horn.
