Ampeg B-15 and DI Boxes and "Ext Amp" and etc.

The Heil PR-40 is a front loading mike with very little sound leakage. That's one reason why I like it so much; the other is the deep fat and still defined sound. positioning is an art which can be learned. If I can get away with only a mike, I'll always do that.

And yes - tweeters suck ;-) ! But if you're looking for a more modern sound, I (partly) understand why people want tweeters. On the other hand - they're totally unnecessary in 'older' bass sounds.

Well, I wouldn't say that they "suck". They are just not so easy to use with a single microphone. In the studio, there is no problem and even gives you an extra flexibility. I've recorded some nice tunes, using some full range condensers for the woofer and SM57 for the tweeter. If you keep them reasonably in phase (easy to do in studio environment), you have the freedom during mixing to change your tone quite a lot. With tweeterless cabs, you don't have that.

played out last night with a great sound-person running the boards...he used both the jdi (from the ext amp) and some sure mic: ksm 42 or sm 27? I don't remember for sure.

I'm not sure what the exact mix I was hearing was comprised of but I'll tell you it was significantly more pleasing to my ears than when he only took my bass direct at the last show. He was pleased with the results as well and said he was going to start mic'ing more often.

Thanks for the help.

Great to hear! I hope you've just started a new micing revolution among sound techs, which will soon spread to Europe.

Shure is okay. But at some point, it's a good idea to start bringing your own mic, giving you even more control of your own sound, even when you'll never know exactly how you'll sound FOH - in that particular venue, with this amount of people in it, etc.. And bringing your mic ready on a stand helps convincing the sound people, too ;-). What amp were you using?

And David - can I include that tweeter quote in my e-mail signature? It's downright brilliant.

I have been reading the threads and doing some research but I still have some questions.

The situation: I gig out with a 1969 B-15n blue-line. Often I just plug my bass into a DI (whatever the club provides) and that sound goes to the mains/house PA.

Last night, Ted (sound man) takes the "Ext Amp" into the DI. "Great" I think. We'll get some tube-y goodness in the mains. But I have to crank the amp because the DI created an "impedance mismatch"

In the future I'd like to get some of the tone of the amp in the mains but want to avoid the impedance mismatch and volume loss. In the clubs I'm playing in I really don't think any sound man is going to want to mic the cab.

Check my ideas:
1. "Ext Amp" gives you a signal from the pre-amp. There is no sure way or DI Box to avoid an impedance mismatch here when going to the mains?

Any DI box with a high input impedance should be fine. 50K-100K aren't going to work. 1Meg-10Meg range will.

b-15n blue line...a 69 I think...jimmy helped me to convince myself to put the altec 421 in and I'm glad I did...I play that out as much as I can...for shows where that is a no go I use a v4 (probably about the same year--it has the same controls and graphics anyway) with an old ampeg 2x15 fliptop cab...

Good to hear.

As I mentioned earlier in a few threads like this one, the Big All Tube Preamp/DI test I was lucky to carry out, has taken place on May 10, in the legendary Wisseloord studios in Hilversum (The Netherlands) and I sent the resulting article to my editor a few days ago. It will appear in Dutch magazine De Bassist soon, including online samples of all 7 set ups included in the test, each played on a '55 P, a '63 P, and a '73 Jazz by their renowned owners. 3 amazing, professional bass players, and 3 ditto sound techs judged the whole thing. The results are devastating and will change the world . So lo and behold, and just a little more patience my friends.

(Oh - and we'll do a similar test for microphones in October.)

Of course I tease. I especially like to tease you, David. You know that. The article needs no further luck, by the way; I already shipped the whole package to the magazine.

Hey - I know a funny game. I give you guys the names of the preamps, and you start posting the numbers 1 through 7 you think came out of the test. Ha! Here we go, alpha-numerical order:

A-Designs REDDI
Jule Amps Monique
Manley Mono Microphone Preamplifier
Ridgefarm Industries Gas Cooker
Universal Audio Solo/610
'71 Ampeg SVT
'71 Ampeg V-4B

The show is on.

Hi .. is this test/review released yet? Where do I find it?

kd5uwl - yesterday got word that the magazine went to press, so it will take a week or two from now until it will be delivered on doormats and to shops in The Netherlands and Belgium. The article (in Dutch) will contain a link to the sound clips, and the web site of De Bassist (Invalid Link Removed) will also give you the link in a few weeks. Of course, I'll also post it here on TB.

Okay. De Bassist magazine #29 is here - with the long awaited All Tube Preamp/DI test in it. The only online link so far is here: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] you can not really read it and moreover - it's in Dutch anyway. But you can hear the sound clips of all 7 devices played with 3 different basses! You can explore them here and make your own judgment: Invalid Link Removed. Have fun!
