I still don't really get this "loud" thing with amps. I would hope the original poster wants to be loud *enough*, have great tone, and hopefully have a desire to run direct through his PA system for a great professional, mixed sound. I have tried a GK1001RB-II, and yes, they are very nice amps for sure. I don't think their tone is as good as an Ampeg B2R though - but that's just my opinion. I also did not think the 1001RB-II was any louder than my SVT-3 PRO...maybe the 800RB is louder than the 1001RB-II, but the GK's, the B2R, B2RE, SVT-3 PRO - they're all loud enough to play in a bar band, and I just prefer the Ampeg tone to GK - that's my opinion.

The tone thing is subjective, so I won't go there.


But "running direct through a PA for a professional, mixed sound" isn't a luxury everyone has. He never mentioned that he had one. In fact, most people I know DON'T have this luxury, and end up using their amps to fill the entire room. This doesn't always work out, however, especially if they only have a small combo amp.

Ok. I assume the "pros and cons" would be that the B2RE would not be powerful enough. I don't think that would be the case, but I don't know everything - I admit that.

great sound .. underpowered i plugged the classic version of it : svt-350h into a ampeg 810 and was extremely weak .

I don't think SS amps are more dependable than tube amps - I just think the B2RE would be a very dependable amp because it's an Ampeg. If I'm a rare minority in thinking the B2RE would be a good, powerful, dependable amp, then I guess the original poster should consider something else. I would take one in a heartbeat.

I'm with you on this Skel. I own 2 Sunn's ( 60 and 120 watt versions) . Also used to own a B2R that I wasn't crazy about(kind of gutless), and just bought a B2RE. I played through a B2RE at a bar gig on St. Patrick's day, and was mighty impressed. PLENTY of power. So impressed I went out and bought one. Now I think the Sunns tone is better, but volume?? No comparison. I just did a side by side with both amps running into the same cabs. The Ampeg is WAY louder. 20/25% would be my geuss @ 4 ohms. My primary reasons for buying the Ampeg were not that the Sunns aren't loud enough, or relialble enough. That's never been a problem. My main reasons were that the Ampeg is more compact, and it's XLR out. Oh yeah, and the master volume for around the house and practice too. The Sunns don't sound really good until they're pretty loud. The Ampeg sounds pretty good at bedroom volume as well as stage volume.
I think the B2RE would be a great choise.

FWIW - I recommend buying a used one on ebay. I bought a B2R on ebay for $300. You can find them on there all the time in excellent condition. I was disappointed in mine, but I was able to sell it on ebay and break even! The tone was okay if the volume knob was below 12 o'clock. Otherwise, it clipped like crazy.

I've used the B2R's for years and never had a problem with the power or volume. Never had to go past 9 or 10 o'clock. I like the sound of them and I've tried a bunch of different amps. (I'm currently in therapy for this.) I just bought a SVT-3Pro and am not sure that I like it better than the B2R's. I've only gigged with it once but so far it doesn't seem to have the bite of the B2R. Just my $.02.
