They really do seem like a weak point in the amp design. I never use the effects loop, either; I’d rather it not be there at all causing problems. There has to be a more reliable way than trusting those tiny little contacts on a switching jack to stay clean and pass through all of the signal cleanly.

They are a weak link that serves as a source of income for techs. A good quality short patch cable is your friend.
