Ampeg or GK for the tour?

Heading out in January for a couple of months with Michael Katon!! Should be fun...the rental company has both GK and Ampeg rigs available. I use a GK 1001RB here at home, and like it. Mike's a traditionalist and thinks the SVT is really the stuff. I like 'em too...I just can't lift 'em anymore! The gig is loud agressive BluesRock...what y'all think about the advantages of either setup? We're talking about a couple of 4/10 cabs, either way. Opinions and experiences appreciated!

Ive never disliked any GK heads when ive heard them being played. Never played one though. Almost everyone else in the town i play in use GKs. Only one guy uses the older 800RB though. I really like his tone, and he plays mostly blues and rock.

the other two players use the little Class D 500's, and sound great as well.

That being said...its an SVT dude...SVT!!!! You'll have plenty of people there to help move the gear and hoist that badboy up on the cabs. shecter5string also makes a good point, if the employer is a fan, its always a good idea to stick with what they like!

always a tough choice, but i'd go Ampeg all the way!!!

The GK's fine stuff, but Michael Katon's a semi-big deal, and if the BL is somewhat of a big deal and expresses a preference, I consider it very wise to listen to him or her. And since you're using two 410's anyway, what's an 80 lb. head along with it?

It all depends on what is the priority. Is it to make the boss happy or for you to dial in a good tone. Nothing against Ampeg but you are already familiar with GK so it would be easier for you to dial in whatever tone you need.

Way cool - I'm a G-K fanboy, but I'd be happy with either G-K or Ampeg. Just hope that's what you really get at every show. ;)

I'm of the opinion that if you are provided any amp that works and has enough guns for the gig, if it sounds bad, I ain't blaming the amp ;) I've had to make some of the worst, most dilapidated, polar opposite of my Ampegs rental rigs on earth work for my gigs, and somehow or another I always make it happen.

Id say go with the GK, just because i feel as if they are more on point to take wear. If you are going to be touring with them id go with the GK. I play ampeg, but the GK rigs are better (to me at least). Go with what you think is right, go to the music store and play through a couple, see what sound you like better, its all about the sound YOU want, not the sound other people tell you that you should sound like. And anyways, if you picked the GK and didnt like the sound it had, or didnt have something you liked about the ampeg, You dont want to have to tour with a setup you dont like. Thats just my opinion on things. Jam on dude! :D

Sorry, but if the SVT's didn't take road abuse well, they wouldn't be so widely used on the road. Also sorry, but while I'm still very much a fan of the VT, anyone who's heard a GK/VT side by side with the SVT can tell you there's a difference.

I would assume you would never have to schlep the backline yourself. So, doesn't matter how heavy. Go with what the boss wants! I would think most of what you will hear is from monitors and front of house anyway.
