Ampeg PF-20T vs Ampeg Venture 3

I think I am going to go with a Trace Elliot Elf 2x8.
This might seem sacrilegious to some but I never use the horn in bass cabs so I don’t like paying for something I am not going to use and it seems most high quality cabs have horns.
The Trace Elliot uses really high quality Faital Pro 8PR200 drivers and doesn’t have a horn.
At some point I will probably build my own cabinet but for now I will just get the Trace Elliot Elf Cab.

If anyone is aware of another cab using Faital Pro Drivers (eg 12pr300) or equivalent quality (eg Beyma etc) that doesn’t use a horn let me know. Budget is up to $800 for the cabinet.

Probably placing my order tomorrow.

Thanks for all the suggestions, they have been super helpful.

Why do you say "This might seem sacrilegious"? I've only seen excellent reports about that cab.

I would have chosen the Barefaced One10: no tweeter, $600, 15lbs instead of 27lbs, great sund and surprisingly loud for its size. But I haven't compared them, and I'm sure the Elf is excellent. It's just that I'm getting used to super lightweight cabs, and 27lbs seem really heavy for what it is :roflmao:

Some people were saying that it's easier to coax pleasing overdriven tones out of the PF-50t than the PF-20t, that the 20 watt one is pretty much just a clean amp. Anybody have experience with both?

I own the PF50T and have not played the PF20T.

I have also read that some people can't get any drive out of the PF20T. I believe the difference is the PF50T has more gain. If you want drive from the PF20T, try hitting it with a hotter signal, for example with a clean boost.

Not sure I would describe the PF50T drive as pleasing. When playing solo I don't think it sounds good. But it does seem to work well in a mix (YMMV of course).

Going for the B15 vibe using a 2x8 instead of a 15” might seem a little odd to some people.
I’ve had a 15” Fender cab in the past but I wasn’t really happy with it for home use, everything in the room resonated.
I’m not sure if all 15” cabs are like this though.

I’ll check out the barefaced cab.
I’m also looking at the Ampeg svt210av

hi apologies for the late reply as live in Liverpool UK
the two ten cab is a Ampeg portaflex as you can use it's flip top facility to store the PF50t
the reason I bought the PF50t over the 20ft was for the extra facilities on the amplifier plus the high watts

straight off comparing the two the PF50t is warmer and very enjoyable to listen
the V7 seven is more modern sounding and I do use with the B15 circuit on which is nice sounding obviously you can engage ultra low which gets a lovely sound obviously pair them both with a portaflex cab
ceramic speakers the svt is a good addition mainly I use the V7 through a bergantino 2x12 hdn cab the B15 circuit on the V7 is duel concentric so with a good p bass decent pickups strings quite nice and the compressor is useful too
obviously you will have to consider what your requirements are Tube or class D

best wishes Paul
