None whatsoever. I've done it myself many times. And cranking the gain even harder results in a nice light overdrive that sounds very cool for some things.

Ampeg PF 350/500 Part VII

An Ampeg thought/question here. I read so often, and did again today, that Ampeg has that "scooped" tone. Now this amp has plenty of mid capability for my ears, particularly when going into the 810e that, if I am not mistaken, has kinda baked in mids anyway for clarity in dense mixes. I can set it scooped of course.
Never understood the "scooped mids" rap with Ampegs. If you ask me, that came from people setting their SVT's tone controls at noon but engaging the ultra-hi.

I play an Ampeg B2RE on a classic 410HE and i'd like to change that for a better stack.
That means : True Ampeg sound, something smalest/lightest I could easily take for rehearsal and with enough power for small/medium gigs too.
The PF500 + PF210HE seems to be the solution but i'm not sure of what sound i will get with that cab.
Is the PF210HE really different than the 410HE ?
Will I lose low freq ? gain medium ?
I play mostly indie rock.

The PF210he goes a little lower than the 410he but otherwise sounds in the ballpark. Not an identical match, but of all the PF cabs, it's closest.

Not going to lie...losing two speakers does lose a little of the bigness of tone compared to double the speaker area, but tonally I think it compares. Your mileage may vary.

Loud enough for my gigs for sure. But again, that all depends on the gigs. Wouldn't do a metal or doom gig with a 210.
I would go with a PF115HE instead of a PF210HE, if you're only doing one cab.
I have both of them, and the 115HE on it's own sounds great.
The 210HE sounds good, but missing just a little too much lows, to my personal taste.
(this with a PF800, so soundwise comparable with the PF500)

1x15 are not my fav cabs, but it helps High Camp !

This started out as a really nice B200R combo I bought online. It sounded really good until the amp self-destructed, evidently as a result of a cracked chassis which I learned is a common problem with the 200R's.
So, in order to make use of the cabinet which came with an Eminence 4 ohm speaker, I bought a new PF-350 head last year. Now it sounds just as good as before but with some additional clean headroom since the original chassis was only 220 watts.
The head and cables fit nicely in a laptop bag and now the cabinet is a lot easier to transport without the weighty head attached. It's a very effective grab-and-go studio or medium size venue rig. It's been 100% reliable as well.

I tried à PF500 yesterday and was disapointed.
The cab was bad (TC electronic 2x12) so i guess the sound would be better on a true Ampeg cab, but i wasn't that impressed, compared to my B2RE...

Just picked up a sweet deal on a PF-500. 2013 model.... crossing fingers.... I need a reliable amp. Are the newer models getting better reviews?
yeah, my PF-500 is rather middy, SVT's seem to be pretty flat unless you crank the gain or otherwise set them to non-flat.
That's interesting, do you have any photos of the back end, did you take out the whole chassis, or just the amp components? That's basically what I want to know.

Has anyone else gotten nothing but raves about the quality of the DI from the PF series? My old PF500s are still going strong, and this last weekend I got hugs and high fives from the sound crew after the gig again. I send mic level post-eq, but I don't have anything radical eq'd, just a little bass cut and mid/treble boost.
My Edens didn't even get this much reaction out of FOH.
On another note, I've started master/slaving my two PF500s more often, since I reloaded one of my 2x10s with BP102s. It's about 200 watts of extra headroom.
