Ampeg Portabass

And if you sent 800 watts to the OEM Aura drivers, the magic smoke would leak out. The Eminence BP102's worked pretty well in them, but were a LOT heavier than the Aura's. That pretty much defeated the design goal of the cab.
Fortunately, technology has marched on, and there are neo drivers that allow some killer lightweight cabs.
I think the PB800 delivered about 550 watts at 4 ohms. Still too much for those speakers though.

I have a portabass 1x12 cab that I love. The original speaker was changed out and now it's running 250 watts at 8ohms. I'm running my markbass LM2 through it and it rocks. For practice and small gigs its fantastic. For bigger shows I add a Brickhouse 1x12. The portabass cab is very light, but it is what it is. You're not going to get a great thump out of the cab, but in the mid and upper range on my jazz bass, it sings.

what 8ohm 250watt replacement did you put in it?
any of you that have replaced the original driver - what do you have in the cab now - and how do you like the results?
I truly like the sound of my Portabass 112 cab a lot - but I perform with it on electric & piccolo upright - and it just farts out soo very quickly its unusable.
so I want a 8ohm 12 in it. I see several of you recommending the Deltalites - has anyone
made the swap?

Greetings...i'm reviving this thread with a quick question or 2: I just picked up a new Ampeg PF350 amp and 210AV cab, fully prepared to love it. And while at the store tried the amp out on a used ampeg PB210h....and it sounded kinda awesome--as good as, possibly better than?--the 210AV (although the 210AV is brand new and not broken in any). And back at home comparing the 210AV to my backup 1st gen. GK MB115 combo, frankly the GK killed it both in overall volume and fullness of tone. I realize it's a 15" vs. a 2-10", but i wasn't expecting THAT much of a difference.

So the PB210h is really light, twice as powerful as the 210AV, marked as "Good" condition and selling for $220 at GC. And i dig the built-in dolly. But it looks like these got some seriously mixed reviews here though...I can't believe i'm wondering about swapping the brand new 210AV for a probably 10 yr old PB210h........am i crazy?
(or maybe it just turns out i'm a GK guy and i bail on the whole Ampeg plan!?!?)

Any thoughts, experience, input would be most appreciated! Thanks for listening to my rambling! :wacky:

The drivers in the 210AV are better then the original speakers in the PB210 - but the PB is a bigger cab - and it is probable that it's delicate original speakers have been replaced and hopefully upgraded. If that is the case, I would rather have the PB - but if loud volume is a concern, I would not be shopping for any 210.
