I am considering buying a mesa 400+ and was wondering about getting an ampeg preamp like svp-cl to run through the 400s power amp when i want an ampeg sound. Has anyone tried this? How would it compare to an ampeg svt cl?

I guess it would sound great.
I tried my Tech21 Vt bass pedal
in front of my mesa 400+
and also in the effect return and it sounds
    very good !
It really gave an ampeg flavor to my mesa, kind
of a rounder sound and less hi-mid.
Didn't compare side by side to an SVt though...

I run a SansAmp RBI in my rack with my 400+. I do like the variety it gives me. Not sure if it delivers the Ampeg tone but it helps me shape what I want. If I want the Ampeg tone I chose either my V4-B or my SVT.

I've spent WAY too much on amps but I do love the signature tube amps.

Thats cool. I guess what im asking is if i run an ampeg preamp straight into the mesa power amp would that be just as good as an svt? Therefore having no need to own 2 full tube amps or would ther be a significant difference from the svt?

Also can someone give me a tone profile of the 400+ compared to the m6? Obviously its al tube but im talking about the basic tone profile. I liked the flat and slight mid boost settings on m6 but didnt like the power section. How does the 400+ compare to that?

Never played through or heard an M6. I have to believe that the 400 and 400+ would differ though. Hope someone can answer better than me. My opinion on the Ampeg pre before the 400 is that it would still be a 400.

There is a Youtube video that compares a true Vintage SVT and a 400+ side by side. Just don't think an Ampeg pre is gonna do it for ya, I could be wrong though.
