Ampeg rig to a GK rig: What can I expect?

I have a lead on a trade deal. I would be trading my (all-USA) Ampeg SVT-4 Pro and SVT-810E rig for another TBer's GK 1001RBII and 810SBX. I know, I'd be taking a bit of a loss, but I'd like to try something different. I still have my SVT-2 Pro, SVT-610HLF, and SVT-200T--I'm fine on 'peg gear.

However, I have very little knowledge of the "GK tone." As a near-lifelong Ampeg user, what differences and similarities in tone and function can I expect when I plug into this rig?

You can expect your "awesomeness" to increase greatly. I've had both amps, personally I think the 1001RBII has incredible, modern tone. I found the SVT4-pro to be very versatile, but overall somewhat nondescript. IMO, ampeg tube heads are great, their solid state/hybrid amps are ok. GK- 800RB, 1001RB, and 2001RB are all outstanding.

I used an Ampeg B2 combo(with a 15")+410HLF, and now use that same gear you say: 1001RBII+810SBX.
Well, I guess it´s not that you can compare my Ampeg gear with your SVT4Pro+810E, but I can tell you about my particular experience. I really like much more my GK gear, sound is much more modern and powerful, has more "punch". The Ampeg sounds much more classic, more solid maybe. It depends the sound you like, but I can tell you if you want a different sound, you are gonna find it for sure with the trade.

You can expect to scare yourself the first time you plug in and play at high volume! The punch and clarity of the GK can be startling compared to an Ampeg. Also, expect to be amazed at the fullness and how non-sterile it sounds.

You'll be happy with the GK setup methinks.
It's a very clear sound which can also be muddied up as much as needed. Make sure you use the EQ section until you achieve the desired result. The pre is very powerful and leaving it all flat just may not be exactly what you want -- no matter because you can adjust it lots.

Also you will really hear the sound of your bass. Long live GK!

What will you think? What do you normally think when you poop your pants? That sums it up.

I've never been a fan of Ampeg stuff, especially when all the stuff I've used had to be turned up almost all the way to be heard. My GK rig is ungodly loud at half volume! I switched and haven't looked back.

I used some GK stuff back in the day. Liked the amps, hated the cabinets. What are they using for speakers these days? I think it used to be a rebranded eminance or something like that. Actually I have no idea what ampeg puts in their boxes these days either so I'm probably not too much help here. Carry on.

The Neo series really changed that, IMO. I liked the RBH Series (I used to own a pair of 115RBH cabs, and I've used a 410RBH numerous times), but they haven't impressed me as much as the Neo cabs have. The sheer size of the RBH series cabs has always been a turn-off for me, too.

It's amazing how much volume and fullness can come out of a lightweight 2x12 cab, though. I scare my bandmates with my 2001RB and Neo 212 every time I come over to jam. :bassist:

Anyhow... regarding the GK sound: It's definitely more in the head, but don't disregard the importance of good cabinets. I see punk bassists use 800RB with Ampeg cabs all the time, and even though an Ampeg cab can impact the sound significantly (I've found they tend to be warmer and darker in voicing), the tone that comes out of that combo is still distinctly GK.

With the right cabs, you can still catch some of that Ampeg vibe (don't expect to sound just like an SVT, though). But once you learn to use the EQ and the Boost control, you'll definitely appreciate the flexibility of the head to do a lot more than that!

I think all the Ampeg stuff you've used must have been sick. Confessing that I'm biased towards their gear, but I've NEVER played one that was "underpowered". My amp literally cracked my practice room window the one afternoon that I decided to crank it - along with making myself public enemy #1 with my local police AND the neighbors on my street...

If you like the more modern tone, go for it.
