Ampeg SLM made 8x10?

I have a chance to get a SLM Made 8x10 for a very good price (~$300)

I really like the Ampeg 8x10 sound but I know the SLM ones have a reputation for being a bit dark sounding, is this significant enough to make it worth skipping?

I'd be running a P Bass and a Verellen Meatsmoke through it

If the price is good I'd go for it. They are a li'l darker sounding bit nothing a li'l EQ won't fix.

I think that is a very good deal. Those cabs are a bit dark, but still good cabs. I was playing through one when I was waiting on my Heritage. I am a very picky tone whore and was more than able to dial in tones I was satisfied with.

For $300 I might be able to overlook the darkness They do EQ up nicely, will admit that.

Great price.

Those are the heaviest of the Ampeg 810 cabs weighing in at around 165 lbs. The SVT-810E is 25 lbs lighter at around 140lbs.

BTW, not all SLM cabs are dark. Only ones made between 2000 and 2006.

Missing a lot of tolex, but works fine. How do you find the date of the cab? Is there a method to decoding the serial number?

5th digit should be a letter. The code runs:

A = 1988
B = 1989
C = 1990

Etc.

I'm running an Ampeg B410he (cheapy cheap) with a Verellen Meatsmoke. Think this would be a worthwhile upgrade to leave at the practice space? I've got a car that can fit it as well.

B410he is a cheapy cheap, but it's not a bad cheapy cheap. There are worse budget cabs. I guess the 810e would be fine, but it sounds like a wreck, and I don't know if I'd pay $300 for a dark-years wreck.

4 Pro is a badass piece of machinery. It's the one head I keep threatening to get, but I never do. I love getting them on rental gigs, though.

Yeah, I really liked the 4 pro I played, but I'd definitely be flipping it if I ended up picking this up.

Never hurts to have a 4 Pro. Hard to argue with a Meatsmoke, though. They are nice amps.

If it's not bright enough for you, you can put a pair of 32ohm Jensen Mod 50's in the top two positions and still have your 810 (+ 2 replacement woofers) for $400 or a bit less.

Are only two of the Jensen drivers really enough to make a big difference?

And, does this modification affect the power handling capability of the cab?

Thanks for the tip. (I bought one of these for under $200, and part of the sellers pitch was to say it produced a lot of mud).
