Ampeg SVT 4 Pro vs. SVT 6 Pro

I currently have the SVT 4 but came across the SVT 6 being sold used at a good price online. I've been wanting to buy a second amp as a back-up so the 6 Pro is very tempting. Is there much difference in tone between the 2 of these amps?

I've used Ampeg SVT-4 Pro's since 1997. 1500 gigs or so on them. I bought a SVT-6 Pro becuase it was 2 rack spaces and that was important at the time as I was trying to scale my touring rack down to 4 spaces. I used the 6 Pro for 3 shows and returned it to GC. I was never able to make it sound good or anywhere close to the Ampeg SVT-4 Pro.

I have an SVT 4 Pro but never tried the 6.

the problem here is you'll ask 5 bass players their opinion and get 7 opinions in return.

as a backup to the the 4Pro the 6Pro looks fine on paper - you are then committing to buy the 6pro to use it for the 1% of time the 4 fails you, which is quite an investment.

as a backup to a 4Pro I would most likely look as the 3Pro which I have tried and has a fantastic sound.

Well the other one I had my eye on was the 7 Pro, which, brand new, is around 100 bucks cheaper than the 6 Pro which is an ex demo. I like the idea of the parametric eq. The only thing that I'm leaning towards the 7 Pro for are the light weight and the headphone input.

And I completely disagree, having played with most all the Pro Ampegs, I liked the 6Pro best of 'em all. Great tone, simple eq, lots of power. Thumbs up here.

Exactly what I have found. I love the 6Pro. A true tone monster. It does take a little time to get the most out of your settings. My wishlist, however would be the 6Pro with a standby switch, stereo down to 2ohms for cabinet versatility and shave off twenty pounds. Perfect!
