Ampeg SVT-7 PRO: no sound comes out!!!

Hi,

any help is appreciated a lot!!!

Today i finally received my hardly used SVT-7 PRO.

Connected it with a new Speakon to Jack. When turning the amp on it took a few seconds and the green light came up and the fan started.

Plugged in my bass in joyful anticipation but i couldn't hear anything!!! No sound comes out!!! :crying::mad::eek::scowl:

When hitting the strings the red "Signal" light and the orange "Thresh" light is flickering...

I have absolutely no idea what the problem is. Is there a fallacy or is anything broken?

Aaaaaaaaarghhhhhhh....

Please help!

Thanks
Andy

I believe there is some history of this problem with SVT-7's. I'll say it: search the TB threads.

I have experienced this same issue two or three times. And no, it was not caused by overdriving the amp into protect mode. Each time it happened was when I turned the amp on at a gig, did a brief (like 5 seconds) level check, then turned the volume of my bass down to 0, put my bass on a stand, went to set up other gear, and then returned 20 minutes or more later to begin playing. (Yes, I turned the volume on my bass back up.) Same symptoms as you - flashing signal and compressor lights, but no sound whatsoever. In each case it was cured by turning the amp off for about 10 seconds and then turning it back on. I greatly hope - in this order of preference - (1) this never happens to me again, or (2) it can always be cured by simply turning the amp off and back on again.

Open the speaker cable ends and make sure the connections are ok and tight on the speakon end.
Plug your bass into the "poweramp in" and see if you have sound (although it won't play loud), if it does then try at the effects return jack. If you get sound this way try an instrument cable to "loop" from preamp out to poweramp in, if still no sound try from effects send to effects return, if still no sound open the amp case and look for a dislodged/loose preamp tube. If you get no sound when plugging into the poweramp in then the unit has big problems (after also checking the speaker cable ends).

A few ideas
My 7 Pro will allow for a 1/4" speaker cable to fit in the middle of the Speakon so that could help you trouble shoot
Obviously check all cables and cabinet against a known working head
Also, what input are you plugged into on the Mesa cabinet; just wanted to make sure that this is the full range input and not just hi freq input
Lastly, does the flashing red mute LED come on with the switch depressed or not?

What's the revision (version) of the amp? There should be a white sticker on top. If it's Rev A, then most likely the main board is no good and needs to be replaced. I too went through this with my "barely used" SVT-7. Wound up buying a new board from Ampeg (Rev D) and it's been awesome since.
The early versions of this amp had many many quality control problems. Ampeg will deny it, but it's well documented - hence 4 different versions of the main board until they got it right.

As I see it you only have one choice and that is to contact the seller. There is a chance that the unit was damaged in transport but if it was reasonably packed that shouldn't have happened. If you get no joy from the seller, try calling up the distributor in Germany to see about a version upgrade or repair. You might have to bite the bullet on this one, unfortunately. May I wish you luck in getting it sorted.
