Ampeg SVT Classic troubleshooting

I recently purchased an Ampeg SVT CL used off of Craigs List. It's my first all tube bass amp. When I tested it at the sellers home, it worked fine. The next day I plugged it into my SVT 810E cab and played a G&L L2000 set to passive mode through it. It seemed like the pre-amp was distorting at significantly earlier stages than it was the night before. still lots of over-all volume. The next day after that, I played a 73 P-bass through it and there was no volume in the power amp section. Crank it to 10 and it sounded more like 2 or 3. Pre-amp seemed operable. THE NEXT NIGHT, last night, I went in for band rehearsal and tried it again with the G&L and the rig sounded beautiful.

My questions are as follows...

1. Why would it behave like this? Previous owner said he re-tubed 2 years ago or so and hadn't played more than 3 times a week plus a couple of gigs a month.

2. The bias lights are both on green constantly, and then when I play, they're green and then they flicker over to red and then back to green as the note dies. Is this right? Or should those lights not be on at all unless there is a problem?

I appreciate any answers anyone is willing to give very much.

Thank You!

Hi.

While my encounter with SVT CL was really short back in the day, I do remember that the (idiot) LEDs are supposed to be at the treshold of green and red without signal, but the load applied obviously.

The LEDs however aren't supposed to be too reliable, but I wouldn't know as I never tested them. Sold the head quickly, for a profit ;).

Your problem sounds to me more like a bad conection at some pre amp tube socket. The best course of action IMHO, would be to have the head serviced by a competent tech. Money well spent.

Sam
