Its interesting because I use the exact amp setup you are using (Ampeg SVT Classic + SWR 6x10) and I love it; its been my classic rock rig for 7+ years. While the SWR is a bear to haul around, it does have built-in wheels and a rear handle, while almost any 4x10 means you have to move with a hand truck, so I think the two cabinets are about equal in their portability.
When I play a smaller venue and don't need the 6x10, I either use a combo amp (I've got a few good ones) or match the SVT with a Trace Elliot 1x15 cabinet. I gets lots of compliments on the sound of this setup, especially from other bass players.
I wouldn't get rid of the SWR if it works for you, because I don't know how much you might benefit by replacing it with a 4x10. I recommend that you find a good 4 ohm 15" cabinet and see if that works for you.
