Double Bass ampeg tube amp for double bass

I'm playing bassguitar and double bass. When I'm playing both at a gig, I'm using my Roland DB700 combo. Nice sound. My other rig is a stack with an Ashdown ABM EVO 500 amp and a 4x10 and 1x15 cab) But I have some GAS for an all tube amp.

Is an ampeg B-15S any good for a double bass?
And the V4-B seventies, should that one be usefull?

sure. they sound just fine. i used to use a SVT with my old Kay and it sounded good. i've also used an old sunn 400 watt tube head that sounded really really good, and the more recent sunn 300T (now the fender bassman 300T). all were decent sounding amps with both carved and plywood uprights. i also used a bunch of different strings and pickups, all to good effect. so i'd say you're pretty safe.

Well the B15S weighs quite a bit. Personally, it's not an amp that I'd want to have to schlep around to gigs. It's a 60 watt amp. If you just wanted to have a tube amp around I'd look for a SB12 or a B12N there not very powerful but they have that warm tube sound and are pretty easy to transport. It kinda depends on your budget. All of the Ampegs especially the filptops sounded good with DB. I still have my B-15N in the garage. The V4 would give you more power and could be combined one of the newer lightweight cabinets.

Once Upon A Time the Ampeg B15 was the cornerstone for getting a good bass sound. Then Walter Woods totally changed the playing field with one of the first digital switching power suppiles. Now there are a lot of amps to choose from. Markbass, Gallien Krueger, Euphonic Audio, Acoustic Image, Genz Benz and others. Markbass even has tube preamp in one of their new incarnations. The B15S is a "blast from the past" but schelping one around can be a truss from the present.

I've got a '66 B15 and a '74 SVT.

With my bass, setup and pickup these don't really work optimally for amplifying double bass. The B15 doesn't have quite enough volume and the SVT is overkill.


addition: I DO like a tube preamp/ss power amp set up though.

Yeah, I use a Clarus and M-line and am a very happy camper, and the tendinitis in my elbows (from lugging heavy gear) has disappeared, but I was just singing the praises of the sound of the flip top for Contrabassie, since he asked. (and warned him about the schlep!).

Well,
I do really like the sound of the B15 Cabinet, so for a short while, I used two of them and drove them with my MI-100-8 Woods. It wasn't very loud, but I liked the sound. Then I got a GK 200MB with one of their powered extension cabinets. It was every bit as loud, really easy to schlep around and fit on almost any stage. There was a difference in the warmth of those B15 cabinets though. They sounded very nice.

Hi,

I just saw this and was wondering, what settings do you use on your DB700?

I use a DB500 to amplify my hybrid through a Bassmax and I've had mixed results (feedback being the biggest problem).

I don't want to hijack the thread, but any suggestions would be cool.
