Ampeg V-6B - Any info appreciated

Saw this come up locally. Looks likes it’s in good condition and I’ve always wanted a 2x15 cab. The pictures show it looks like it’s in decent shape, I’ve just never heard of it before.

Any idea on what value should be on the used market?

I had one that I bought new back in the mid 70s. It’s barely noticeable behind me in my avatar. It wasn’t anything special, and I decided that I wanted more eq options than it offered, so I let it go after five or six years. It was reliable though. One of the most bland looking faceplates I’ve ever seen! I eventually loaded the cabinet with Altec 421s, which was an improvement over the standard CTS 15s.

Prices are all over the place. I’ve seen cabs with JBL, Altec, even EVM speakers. So the price would depend on what is in it. The cab speakers are front loaded and a port is in the middle. There are catalogues in the TB Portaflex Wiki. See the 1970 brochure. The info is vague.

JBL’s typically have the aluminum cones.

I owned a 120 watt B-410 combo, same preamp as the V6-B Pretty rare nowadays. I bought it, because I saw Anthony Jackson playing one with Buddy Rich. I really liked that amp- it was pretty good for it's time, 1977. It was heavy, and I sold it to get something else. I'd run across V6 B's at rehearsal studios, and they sounded pretty good, twice the power of the B-410.

I owned that model 2x15, it wasn't a great cab. At all. I gladly traded it for a Peavey 4x10.

I've had a V6B since around 1980. Haven't used it in decades, but a friend of mine uses one of his 2 on the regular. I've played through it plenty of times.

It's a good head. Reliable and sounds decent. Similar to an SVT in some ways. Weighs about 40lbs. Never played through a matching cab, though.

I have the b-40 head only version of the b410. It has a nice SS grind, with SVT layout. Large and heavy!

I bought the V6B rig with the standard (non-premium) drivers way back when they first came out. I already had a V4B at the time. Compared to the V4B, the V6B didn't impress me all that much. I remember it sounding a bit "cardboard-y", sort of like the Peavey heads of that era. I took the head back and kept the cab. I liked that cab, within its drivers' limitations of course. The hundred-watt V4B posed little threat to its drivers' longevity.
