you have the ultra low switch on. Its known as the tone suck switch. Turn it to 0 you amp should break up earlier and not fart out!

I have noticed my bass can be quite a bit boomy, but I figured this was just a characteristic of this particular P-Bass. Worth checking into.

Ultra low switch off and lower the pickup......I commonly see the pickups too close on guitar and basses.

Unless you have very soft magnets (like alnico 2 magnets) the pickups should always be lowered first when you have too much gain at low volumes....can be a real problem with alnico 5 and ceramic magnet pickups too close.

Wow, you're right, I'm an idiot. Good catch. I was thinking about the volume sensitivity rocker. Hm. Guess I'll just have to try a different cab, and mess with the pickup height.

I could turn down below 2, but then forget any sort of overdriven tone, or tone at all. Its a 500 watt cab, and in pretty damn good condition too. Not really the answer I'm looking for.

Have you tried adjusting the tweeter level at all on the cab? It might be set too high. Tweeters often don't get along with overdrive. Try turning that down.

If I understand it correctly. .. The op is trying to get the SAME TONE outta the amp but at a lower volume.
It's a vintage all tube amp. Doesn't quite work the same if you simply turn down. Sure that's an option. ..But i think he's stated his answer a few times.

Yeah, that was one of the first things I messed with. I have it totally turned to the right at 0. BTW, do you know what the infinite level all the way to the right is?
