AMPEG V4BH 12AU7/12AX7's which???

Where did it say there should be a 12AU7 in preamp?

In the OWNERS MANUAL it states 4x6881/6L6GC's power tubes
2 x 12AX7 2 x 12AU7 ???????????????


I know these manuals are often not quite correct. But I've got 2 12AX7's & 2 x 12AU7's in her now & she seems to be pretty similar to what it was with 3 12AX7's & 1 x 12AU7.
These are all OS Phillips- I've had since the 70's (well the 12AX7's are) the 12AU7's are JJ's.
I DID notice the overdrive was smoother with the Philips compared to the stock GT(rebranded SOVTEKS)

Sounds good either way so far. Gigging with it w/ 2x12AU7's & 2 x 12AX7's in 2morrow nite! Will let know

Sounded GREAT-again...YAY!!!!! - on Sat. nite. So nice in fact I used it again in our jazz/blues band (where I usually use the LMII)

Didn't notice any early break up or lack of vol. etc. DID notice a nicer sounding OD(very slight-when I 'dug in) as I'm using the OLD Philips 12AX7's in it. & the GT12AU7(sovtek).
Today tho, I was fossicking around in a 2nd hand store- came across a valve(tube) tester machine- damn I wish I knew how to work it- it was a beauty made in UK in the 60's bvy the looks & had the orig. manual -w/ all valves listed.. ANywhoooo
I was looking around in a box of old valves-they've got all the popular ones/good ones & marked them at astronomical $$$$!!!!!!!! Surprise surprise!!! But I found a couple of old MULLARD 12AX7's in there- 50c ea. Just tried em out in a mates Epi Jr, & they sound GOOD. Cant wait to try 'em in the V4BH!
