Amplification suggestions. What amp or amp/cab do you play?

I really don't use amps and cabs for gigs anymore but my two rigs are:

• GK 800 Legacy with Eden 4x10
• GK 500 Legacy with an Aguilar 2x12

On the rare occasion I need to gig with an amp, the 500 Legacy and Aggie 212 generally get the nod.

The 800 Legacy and Eden 410 are pretty much relegated to the studio due to weight.

For home practice, I'd keep it simple. A 350 watt head (either Genzler Magellan or Mesa Subway, both are excellent) and a 112 cabinet. I personally use RevSound - I have a pair of 112s - but can also recommend Genzler 112TV or Mesa Subway 112. Both are more than enough to shake your walls, have a small footprint and are lightweight and easy to move.

I play a Legacy 800 thru a neo iv 112. Love the sound. I had the 115, bet never really fell in love there, it was close to what I wanted, but something was almost too clear.

Now, I’m ready to buy the second 112, but contemplating the 212.

I'm going low end here. I'm playing through a Rumble100 and I barely turn it past about 10% available power. My typical setting is gain 3, master 3, bass volume knob 3. How much volume do you need for home practice? How big of a room are you playing in? I mean, you need a 30' room to just reproduce lowest bass frequencies, plus high ceiling.

I can shake the walls if I dig in too much even at those settings.

I had many cabs and amps but my actual sweet spot for the last few years is my Traynor SB 500H amp with my two GK Neo 112 cabs.

Punches a lot, lots of headroom, deep and articulate bass but rather voiced for rock IMO but eh, that’s what I play ! And being a class D amp, no hiss, no hum and the fan is very silent.

I am not sure what you are expecting. Have you tried Jad Freer, Tecamp/Eich, or Wayne Jones?

I play a Mesa D-800+ through a 15/6 fEARful and a Fearless F112.

I'm sure there have been variations on this theme throughout TalkBass over the years. But I ask this for a very specific purpose.

I am looking to buy a new at-home practice rig and am curious what the community is working with, in an attempt to potentially discover some brands or combinations I may have been sleeping on.

My main rig for years was the stereotypical Aguilar TH500 with 2 SL112 cabs. That was a great setup. I eventually sold it & tried a MarkBass CMD 102P. That was fun for gigs, but I never quite loved the tone. Most recently, I've been playing a GK Legacy 800 through a 4ohm GK Neo IV 410 cab. This was an attempt to replicate my old GK 800RB, but it's just not the same.

I've also played through a Genzler rig with the tilted Array 112 speakers. That was a cool setup. Very neutral. And I tried a Bergantino rig too. It was decent. I've done the Hartke thing and have played thru a Mesa (really nice!).

Ultimately, I'm looking for a good rig that is versatile... good punch, nice lows but also potential for crisp highs. I think I want to get back to 12" speakers. The 10s just don't do it for me anymore. I've never liked 15s, so 12s is my sweet spot. I play a lot of different styles from slap to old school MoTown to jazz to typical bar band tunes. My main basses are a Fender P with flats and a 5-string Fender Jazz.

Once again this is not for gigging. I have that covered but I don't like that setup at home.

And while asking such a broad question, I recognize that I may be trying to drink from a firehose. Still, I'm curious what else is out there that might turn my head.

For me, what I use for home practice isn't an amp/cab, but rather I use a preamp pedal that has an input for music and an output for headphones. That way I can plug in my bass, my headphones, and my iphone that has my music files, and play my bass along with my music without disturbing anyone else.

For at home practice? I use a laptop or desktop with audio in. Either via audio interface or via a usb to 1/4 inch cable. Load up a sound in the DAW. Can do guitar, synths or bass. Either do an arrangement in the daw, or can bring in tracks to split, slow down or re do. Or I can just play along with anything I can play on the laptop.

Makes it easy to record and hear yourself back. Can do video/audio whatever.

Laptop can go to monitors or headphones.

So I guess the answer is... I don't really use an amp at home that often. I do have a couple rigs for rehearsal with the band or recording and can do loud stage or quiet.

I have a very similar setup. I have an HX Stomp with cab sims & JBL monitors with a subwoofer. Many times I practice with headphones. But sometimes, I just want to hear and feel an amp & cab. Hence, the thread… lol.

100% Trickfish for me. I have the Bullhead 1k, SM110, SM112, and TF408 cabs. The 112 is the sweetspot for me, though I've been gigging the 408 lately and that is a killer gig cab when things get louder. For home, the BH1k + 112 cab is perfect, but it can handle plenty of gig scenarios.

I’ve been in talks with them. Their Bullhead 1K and a couple of L112s might be the ticket for me. It’s more than I should spend on a practice setup though.

I've tried countless combinations of gear through the years, including much of what you have tried. The two combos above are what you need.

I’ll check those out. I’m not really looking to buy something super expensive. Just a solid sound for middle of the road money.

I’ve had a bit of a change of heart when it comes to basses. I’ve sold off every boutique bass I own. I’m down to a Fender J 5-string and a Fender P 4 string. I also have a Czech-made Elrick NJS (which is still my favorite bass I’ve ever owned). Nothing super boutique. They’re fantastic though. Over the years, I’ve played the finest instruments and many are nicer that what I own now, but not 3x the price nicer.

GR Bass AT Cube Acoustic if you add a second 12 Cabinet it’s @ 800 watts. Which might be overly optimistic but it’s plenty loud for my gigs.

I use rack gear at home. I have a nice tidy rack on wheels with drawers for pedals or other stuff like picks and cable storage. There is a large open section where I keep my reference books. My small 10" cab sits on top. Not entirely practical for everyone. Too heavy to steal as well.

If I need an amp and cab on stage, it’s a khan vtdi into a gk mb500 into a 4 ohm neo 4x10.

At home it’s the khan vtdi or pedalboard into a rumble 100 combo.
