amps and electronics magazines?

I really wanna get to know more about amps, preamps, poweramps, compressors, limiters and all that stuff so that I can build myselfa monstrously good rack head but I dont have the money to be playing around with different pieces of equipment.

is there a magazine or anything I could subscribe too that would help me with this?

iv searched google and this site but i'm constantly flipping between windows with pictures and reviews by different people and different opinions. And as everyone knows you can't trust everything you read on the internet! I'm just after one solid source of information that I can trust and preferably not need to be sat infront of a computer to read!

I'm after the bass equivilant to sound on sound magazine (i think thats what its called anyway)
