Amps + speaker configurations

Hi guys,

Our band was out gigging in France not so long back, and the three piece band after us had a bassist with a Stingray, and to my surprise, 1x12 (possibly 10 though I think 12) GK Microbass (I think), plus an extension 12" cab on it (different brand).

I can't tell you how astonished I was at the punch of this rig and how well it worked with the drums considering the size of it. This got me thinking, dang, I need a better setup.

I have also considered upgrading anyway since my GK MB 1x15" gets a bit boomy in bigger venues where more juice is required. I want a rig that sounds like that fella's gig - clear and punchy, but not boomy.

So, the question is, is 2x12" enough? Could I get a 1x12" Microbass (or something similar) and tack an extension cabinet on? Or is this an expensive way of doing things?

An Ashdown Electric Blue EB 12-180 EVO II for example:

I think it really depends on the cabs you are looking at. There are good cabs with two 12" speakers that can have the volume output of an 810, there are also bad cabs that will only get you so far. A big part of that "punch" is how you are EQing your sound. Loud and muddy is about as effective as quiet and punchy. If you can not be heard it doesnt matter. Since you are on that side of the pond I would check out Barefaced Bass, their Big Twin is probably more cab than most will ever need, and it is "just" a 212 (and a mid range driver =D).
