Double Bass AMT TP

So AMT has a tail piece mounted version of their mic now. Has anyone tried it? I just ordered one. I've been using my standard one for a while now and have completely fallen in love with the sound. It took me a long time to find the sweet spot. On my bass it sounds great just inside of the G side f-hole at the notch. When I say just inside, I mean so that it is partially over the f-hole. I can get quite a bit of volume out of it without feedback or bleed and it really sounds good. It is a MAJOR step closer to my bass but louder.

I usually mix a little pickup (either a BP-100 or a Stat-B--both are on the bass) with the mic. How much I mix in depends on the room. Some rooms, I go mic only. One room I play in is a bit woofy and needs more pickup. Usually it is about 80% mic and 20% pickup.

I want to give a shout out to the Gollihurs. I ordered the mic at 1:29 PM today and it was shipped at 1:54 PM. I wrote back to them to ask what took so long!

I've had one for awhile, Marty redid mine for TP mount. Works great when the cheap cable isn't busted.

I was lucky enough to get a AMT used with the tailpiece mount. The nice thing about it is that you can leave the mic on the bass all the time. If anything the AMT is to sensitive and can sometimes pick up too much of the other instruments that are in close proximity, especially drums.

I had one but I am back to the body mount now. The thing is that I didn't use it all the time so having it on all the time was a pain. I'm now using a Marvin tailpiece cable so that would have prevented me from using the AMT TP anyway.

I've heard that if you get the tailpiece mounted version it doesn't give you as much range to put the mic as the side mounted version. Is this a problem? I've always thought it would be cool to have the AMT and to have it permanently on the bass. But if the side mounted version would give the best range of placement - then would that one be a better idea?

I have the side mounted on there now and through trial and error found the sweet spot. The tail mounted one will go right to the sweet spot so I really don't need the extra range. I'll still have the side mounted one if I want to experiment some more.

I'm actually thinking about the leaving the side mounted one on my main bass. I don't even take it off anymore. The case fits right over it. And then use the tail mounted one on my Kolstein Travel bass. The side mount mic doesn't fit very well on the Kolstein and my options are the tail mounted mic or buy a cello rig (which still uses the same mic as the bass rig).

Mark, how far off the table is the head of the mic? Just curious. I really dig it when people post regarding mic positions that work well for them, so thanks.

I would think the side mount version would allow for a wider variety of placement options overall, especially for locations w/ the head of the mic away from the vertical centerline of the bass. It would also be easier to switch from one bass to another, or just take on and off I reckon. Might also be more popular if you ever think of selling it later. Just seems more flexible to me, albeit less convenient in some ways.
