Once again. I do take that original comment back. It is indeed 'IIBS'...

One jazz guy has been incredibley rude to me (on numerous occaisions even when I've been genuinley intersted in what he has to say and made the effort to go to his frikkin gig!) and a sound engineer friend of mine has related numerous stories to me about simelar tings. Other people have also related they opinions to the same effect.

I shouldnt have made that criticism based on one persons actions and other peoples comments. I'll make my own mind up from now on!

Come on - we want names!! I have heard stories about the odd one or two Jazz sax players, being "hard to work with", but have no direct experience.

I think those who teach, can't really be arrogant - but then when you are teaching you have to be really confident (secure) about you own abilities or you are going to get caught out pretty quickly. I would suspect people who are arrogant, of being insecure about what they are doing.

If you mentioned some names, I could tell you where I think they stand in terms of UK Jazz rankings - I mean I read every UK Jazz magazine, devour any radio/TV programmes and go to one or two gigs every week! If I haven't heard of them, then they're not worth bothering with!!

Oh, I doubt these guys are big-wigs in the UK jazz scene, but as far as I'm concerned they're amazing players by comparison... I wont give names. I aint no rat!

That gives me an idea... I hadn't thought of buying a jazz mag... not since I've had a girlfriend anyway! I might check one out.

My teacher is Dave Lobenstien. I think I spelt the last name correct. He plays in the city all the time, as well as out here on the island - also teaches in public school. He is a really great guy, great player, and a great teacher.

I read the thread title and thought it was about me Oh well...

Anyway, about teachers: I can't see myself without a teacher. I got my first teacher just a few months after taking up the bass. Before then I was reading out of books and teaching myself. Little did I know I had picked up a few bad habits, in regards to technique and other things. There were some things in the books I didn't understand at all (and I didn't have the internet yet to just come on TB and ask...). Having a teacher has helped me break habits, give me someone to play with (my teacher...and also my old teacher...likes doing duets and it's so much fun), learn things I never would've learned on my own...so many things. I feel that having a teacher and coming to Talkbass almost daily will lead me in the right direction and make me the best bassist I can be.

Also glad to have a teacher who was strictly anti-tab and made me that way.
