an unexpected surprise - ibanez GSR100EX

all the lower to mid range ibanez basses have jotoba fretboards - including my GSR100EX and my SRH500. i miss the rosewood fingerboards, but jotoba seems like a good replacement.
i've noticed a lack of consistency in mikros. i have one that sounds rich and good - the other, when i bought it, sounded high-mid heavy and a little nasal without as much bass, but i bought it to drop in a duncan MM pickup, so i didn't care. the original one i owned had a tone between the other two. and of the many i've played at GCs, tone was al over the place.
i'm a bit the opposite. i find 34" scale more natural for me, despite having small hands and playing guitar for years. go figure!
a darling? i must admit, i hadn't thought of it that way. the closest i come to cuddling my basses is when i play on the couch, half asleep and sort of slumped over so i sort of wrap around the bass i'm playing. i think they might be a bit hard to cuddle. maybe we need soft, fuzzy basses
maybe... i hadn't thought of that, but i was a kid in l.a. when he was the mayor.
I picked up a used GSR100 (black) to give to a kid a church. I thought it was a pretty decent instrument, except for its really junky tuners. Pcake, if you're modding to headless, no worries there! I liked the pickup. It had a nice strong attack and a kinda MusicMan sound.
i'm used to those tuners - i have owned several mikros
i'm not going headless with this one as it turns out i'm enjoying it as it is. may grab a used one shortly to go headless, also my husband likes this one and doesn't want to operate on it
Nice. I received the exact same bass just a few days ago. It's my first bass (coming from guitar). I'm really happy with the value for the money I get with this bass.
I've owned guitars several times as expensive, but I love the looks of this bass the most! I'll have to take some proper photos of it.
I also dig the simplicity.

congrats on your new bass, and i think it's a good choice. when i came from guitar, i started on an extra long scale 5 string so wide at the 12th fret that i literally couldn't get my hand all the way across it, so i love ibanez necks.
i like the simplicity, too - i can change the tone with my amp or various pedals.
what do you think of the strings it came with? i'm used to extra lights, so that 105 string is heavy for me.
I haven't played enough bass to get used to anything yet, but they did seem a bit heavy to me. I plan on trying a lighter gauge and having someone set it up for me. The setup was pretty good out of the box, TBH.
Still trying to decide what I like. I tried a Mikro at Guitar Center and loved how easy it was to play.
That’s a really nice looking bass.my husband volunteered to mod a bass into a headless and cut away part of the body as i want something lighter than 5 pounds. he didn't want to deal with paint, so i ordered the Ibanez GSR100EX, a gio that's the cheapest 34" scale bass on any music website. i wasn't expecting much, and figured that i could always replace the pickup after doing the mod.
so the bass showed up a little over an hour ago, and imagine my surprise! it sounds great - a little music man-ish, lots of low end. the neck, which is a hint wider than more expensive soundgear basses but is the same as the GSR200, is nice to play. in fact, within about 2 minutes, i no longer noticed it at all, always a good sign. the neck is smooth but not glossy.
while there are some slightly rough parts on the body, it's not parts where it bothers me. the finish is only oil, so since there's some end grain, that's probably why it's not perfectly smooth. their gloss black version is probably smooth, but i have only seen this version at GC. oh, we like the stripey body, too.
i played it for most of an hour - i didn't mean to, but in addition to a nice sound and feel, it doesn't hurt my shoulder when i play it while sitting down, and that's unusual for a full sized bass.
my husband doesn't want to do surgery on it - he said he'd take it off my hands if i didn't want it, and we'd buy another bass to mod
Better get something for hubby to start carving up soon before he mods the snowblower for more power.
You can't even spell Steinberger, let alone purchase one!

I used to gig a GSR200 regularly. I crammed a set of active emg PJ p’ups. Wired it VVT, that thing thundered hard and weighed next to nothing.
That’s a really nice looking bass.

You could always get a headless neck built to match the bass....
I'm amazed at how good cheap basses are nowadays, especially the Ibanez line. Bought a Talman 100 with maple neck a few months ago and it's amazing what $200 will buy.

I've had the five string version for about six years....Like you say,very nice sound and neck feel.But I noticed the finish had completely worn away in the forearm area after two or three years.
I've thought of sanding the rest off,as I actually really like the bare wood....Sometimes I rub it with my hands to try and make it wear off the same.But no luck,so far as I can tell.

you'd still need to mod the body for the tuners. my husband's plan was to cut off the headstock, create the string retainer (or whatever you call it), then we were going to discuss whether to go with the typical headless tuners or use extra small guitar tuners with slightly enlarged string holes.
it IS amazing. this is a great time to be a bass player or guitar player. ibanez creates some awesome budget basses, and for $349 you get the thinner body and active pickups. fender offers some good quality options with their squier line, too.
