Announcement from Sushibox - The Watt

I saw an announcement from Sushibox on Instagram and I thought I would share. It looks like they're going to be putting a pedal made for Mike Watt into production.

"I've had a handful of messages already asking about this, so I guess I can come right out and talk about it.

Mike Watt has been using a couple of my pedals for a while now, and earlier this year he asked if it would be possible to smash everything together into one box for a convenient all-in-one box for gigging and touring. After considerable back-and -forth and several prototypes, The Watt was born.

The Watt essentially combines the Single Slice compressor with the Finally v3 preamp/D.I., giving you a tube preamp, variable HPF, and compressor, all in a conveniently sized package.

Currently there are only two of these in existence, one for Mike and one for me, but I have parts on order to build more. I wasn't planning on even announcing this yet, but part of Mike's testing of the pedal meant using it at a gig, and I guess the word got out. I expect to have these ready to go by the end of September 2025."

Do you guys usually run compression at the end of your chain or are you just imagining using this pedal alone without any others (n which case the compressor would still be first!)?

After years of always running a comp 2nd (after tuner) I have recently been enjoying it in the middle of my chain, after tube preamp (gain set at the edge of breakup) and envelope filter. I am loving it, and not suffering from undue noise with my setup. The main disadvantage of comp last is the amplification of noise, and the degree to which this is annoying depends on the particular pedal chain the the listener. Running a comp before a tube preamp may be desirable to keep the degree of tube saturation constant...vs running the comp after, which preserves some touch sensitivity of the tubiness/harmonics. I also find that running the comp after my envelope filter makes it livelier. As always, YMMV.

If I didn't already have a JHS Punchline, I think I'd want one of these on my board. Nice design, very useful, more compact than my Punchline. I wonder how the HPF compares to the Punchline's amp sim when using the DIs?

Very similar experience here. Env Fil in front of the single slice. I also have a preamp that I don’t always use in front of comp. That’s because I got the feedback I wanted to the input I gave both the pre and the comp when placed in that order.

I did the single slice comp because of my conversation with Watt about comp - which was insightful and awesome. I wasn’t happy with the OE Cali compact bass. But the single slice was just subtle enough to do what I want.

Looking forward to the Watt, I’ll play around with sequence, and will maintain the ability to insert 2 comp circuits is that’s what is needed. I’m surprised at my excitement to this Watt. Good way to wind down the day!!

I play at home and record. I use some compression early in my chain but also add it at the end, often in the DAW (Live). I often want different effects at each point.

I use to run mine middle, but recently switched to second in chain after a HPF.

Which makes me wonder if the HPF is set to hit prior to compression in the The Watt?

Anyway color me very intrigued.
