'Anonymous' hacktivists become web vigilantes

Arguing with religious zealots is usually a fail since they are always right...just ask them, they'll tell you so, and in nauseating detail.

In one sense tho, maybe an ongoing series of concerted DDoS attacks isn't such a bad idea if it keeps WBC's attention occupied on fighting them and away from the rest of the world.

The Internet group Anonymous had gone ahead with its Link Removed to take out a number of website affiliated with the Westboro Baptist Church, doing it during a live interview on the David Pakman Show.

It seems that a couple of factions within the group were responsible for different portions of the attack. First of all, the group DDoSed the site, making it almost impossible to load due to the excess traffic trying to access the server. They then spent about 4 days trying to break the entire system, apparently because it wasn’t as easy as they thought it would be to crack.

Initially, they were able to break into only one server but with the use of a Zero-day attack, they infiltrated the rest of the church’s network, exposing a number of administration pages and the entire layout of the system. During the Inteview, the Anonymous member didn’t take credit for the Link Removed posted earlier this month, but did say that a message was posted on the “downloads.westborobaptistchurch.com” URL. It was later confirmed that it indeed was online, and had a similar layout like the US’s ICE seizure notices.

On the David Pakman Show, Shirley Phelps-Roper (Westboro member) defended her organization by saying “no power can shut these words that are roaring out of Mount Zion.” She even was defiant of the fact that her websites were down, even with confirmation from outside sources that they indeed were. Anonymous did go on to credit famout DDoS hacktivist, th3j35t3r, for taking out the websites and the voice confirmed that his group was responsible for placing the seizure notice (seen above). It was also confirmed in a Twitter comment that Westboro’s site was down.

Jester

th3j35t3r (a.k.a. Jester) has also been responsible for a number of DDoS attacks on various Jihad terrorist recruiting sites, and was also supposedly responsible for the temporary shut down of Wikileaks after the dump of US Cables.

Since then, the Westboro Baptist Church sites have been taken down by the admins for additional security checks. Let’s see if Anonymous tries to break them again.

The first reason is obviously the Jester’s attacks on WikiLeaks, the second more direct reason may be attacks on the Internet Relay Chat servers that Anonymous is using to coordinate attacks. They believe the Twitter account “AnonymousDown” is the same person who is behind th3j35t3r...

Anonymous and the Jester are not even close to the same. The Jester released on his/her website an IRC chatlog of anonymous members trying to figure out who The Jester was. Anonymous does not like the Jester, because s/he took down Wikileaks and is a US nationalist.

Jester - Takes down websites that s/he feels supports terrorism or threatens the freedoms of US citizens.

Anonymous - A very large group of people who support freedom of speech and information throughout the world.

To the kid who thinks this is 'just a DDoS attack' - It's DoS. It is not distributed nor does it use Botnets. The Jester wrote XerXes himself and apparently can use it now from his Android.

Open Letter To The World​
We stand at a unique time in our history, the rise of the internet and computer technology have contributed to an unparalleled rate of prosperity for the First World.

In times of uncertainty there are those who seek to add to the confusion, to prey on our insecurities and fears. Those who would seek to keep us divided for their own gain. The pervasive strategy takes many very convincing forms: Liberals and Conservatives, Christians and Muslims, Black and White, Saved and sinner.

But something unexpected is happening. We have begun telling each other our own stories. Sharing our lives, our hopes, our dreams, our demons. Every second, day in day out, into all hours of the night the gritty details of life on this earth are streaming around the world. Although I don't neecessarily agree with Anon's methods and they do come across as very arrogant, I really am having an impossible time trying to dredge up any sympathy fot the WBC here.
Hell, to tell the truth, I'm not even trying. They don't deserve any sympathy.

Its just a matter of life, not everyone is deserving of the rights that we, as people, are granted. Too often people will abuse them.

The Westsboro church is an unfortunate byproduct of democracy and freedom of speech. It isn't freedom of popular opinion speech, or freedom of what I personally agree with speech, it's freedom of speech. Hacking them is no better.

I agree that hey need to go away. Unfortunately, my method of making them go away is no more right or legal than this.
