So do you plug the holes in the headstock? I assume you go with the 5 string so it has the extra room on the headstock

Yes, I've been working on the plans this week. I traced the existing headstock on paper, then scanned it when I got home. I use the digital scan to play around with placement, and it's been rather educational so far.
Once I establish a v1 of the new tuner placements, I'll cut a mock-up out of MDF to see if it'll actually work in real life. Probably not, because my first iterations never hit the ball out of the park on the first swing
But MDF is cheaper than carving into the actual neck and having no recourse for mistakes.
