Another death in the family.

Sorry to hear about your aunt passing but IMO you HAVE to go. This is one of those pivotal moments in your families history that will live on long after the events are concluded.

Unless you're going in for life saving surgery or some other such serious activity not attending will follow (haunt?) you for the rest of your life. "Kewsi didn't come to aunties funeral because he was a) attending a Justin Beiber concert, 2) getting his eyebrows waxed. 3) changing the strings on his new 6 string bass". Those (and the real reason) reflect badly on you.

Good luck with your decision.

I've known my aunt for as long as I can remember but we were never particularly close. Then again, deaths outside of my immediate family never seem to really affect me. I'm not sure if the funeral will run into the weekend but I'm hoping it doesn't. It's not like a can't miss it but been looking forward to getting up to Philly with a few friends, one who I haven't seen in months. I understand that being there for family comes first though so if mom really wants me to go, I'll go.

First, condolences, prayers, and good thoughts to you and your family, Kwesi.

One thought - Funerals comfort the living, not the dead. Your relationship with your Aunt probably shouldn't be the primary factor in your decision. I'd think that the fact that you are feeling anxiety about not going should be a major factor to consider.

All the best to you and your family in this difficult time.

bwaaa hahaha look at his avatar and this post together... hey seem to go together

i'd choose family...

Lol, they kinda do don't they :p.

Anyway, looks like the funeral is going to be about a week earlier than I thought (this weekend instead of next) so no scheduling conflicts. My brother won't be able to go down because of school but I'll be going down to FL with mom. Already squared things away with my professors.

You should go. Pay your respects.

I admit, I never really understood this concept. I guess I'd get it a little more if she were a bigger part of my life but either way, I myself don't get any sort of closure or satisfaction by going to the funeral and seeing as she's dead, she doesn't either.

Don't get me wrong, I'm prepared to be there for my family but I'm kind of blase about the whole thing. Just don't want mom to be alone.

Kwesi, first sorry about the passing of your aunt, and to respond, only you can answer that. If you are going to be ok with it then I see no problems, but sometimes we are not there for ourselves but to lend support to those that are not as able to cope at that time. Just something to consider. Do as your conscience dictates.

This. You're the only one who really knows enough about this to make that call... so if you're okay with it, that's enough. IMO of course. I will offer this: sometimes, when it comes to family, it's not about you.

Condolences.

Just to clarify, she's my mom's sister-in-law. My Uncle, the one who passed 5 months back, was her brother. But, yeah, I get it. I don't get how my being there really helps anyone but ya gotta do what ya gotta do right?

My parents both passed around 15 years ago. My father's step-brother died around ten years before that. I stayed close to his wife, my aunt, my father's step-brother's wife, even after they all passed. Why? Because she was still family. My son and I regularly gave her a hand with stuff around her house or would stop by and just hang out and talk. Moreso than her immediate family. I know she appreciated it. She died this Spring. I miss them all.

I guess my point is that some things really aren't about you... and sometimes it's better to figure that out sooner than later. If this has any bearing on your situation, cool. If not, just as cool. I hadn't thought about this for a few months now.
